Why do the gps apps sometimes lag behind real time?

While that may be true to an extent , I’ve used the gps for nearly 2 years without a hitch. I live in a major metropolitan area where satellites are generally available. I’ve tried different apps. Why over the he past month or so has this lagging began to occur?
