iMovie crashes on startup on an external monitor with the lid closed

I have a mid 2012 MBP non retina. Just today iMovie decided that it was going to start crashing on startup. I keep my lid closed and have a 23" external monitor. I discovered that if I have the lid open when I open iMovie and then close it it's fine, but now it absolutely will not open if the lid is closed. This used to work fine. So what happened? Is there going to be a fix for this? I've tried restarting, re-installing, trashing plist files etc, and nothing works. What the heck is going on at Apple with this?

MacBook Pro, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

It sure does seem that way. It's not just the crashing. The sound coming through iMovie is terrible. I check video outside the program and it's fine. Inside iMovie it's overly sharp and scratchy. All this just started for me. iMovie had been working just fine with high sierra until I did the latest supplemental update.

There's a lot that seems to not work right when the lid is shut.
