Unwanted programs start when I turn Mac on

When I turn on my Macbook Pro I get Messages, Mail, Google Chrome and VLC start without me wanting them. How can I prevent this? I have tried going into system preferences User Groups and Login items and nothing is showing....what next?

1) Go to System Preferences->Users&Groups, click on Login Items. Select any items in there that you do not want to start automatically, and press the "-" button to remove from the Login Items list.

2) Depending on your settings, your mac may launch the applications that were running when you shut down.

You can UNcheck the box below to avoid that; or, before you shut down, just quit any applications you don't want to launch the next time.
