Which is better? Photos or iPhoto?

I have been using iPhoto for at least ten years, but it seems as if Apple is pushing Photos as a replacement for iPhoto.

What are the benefits of Photos as compared to iPhoto?

IMAC (RETINA 5K, 27-INCH, LATE 2015), iOS 11.2.6, 32 GB RAM, One T Memory

Biggest benefit is Photos is supported and has a future and iPhoto was discontinued over three years ago, has not been updated since and never will be and some day with no warning with some upgrade will totally stop working so it has no future at all.

Beyond that there is the fact that Photos is more stable, have more features, integrates with Apple products better and is gully supported with new releases several times a year each with many bug fixes and many new features

In short iPhoto is dead and Photos is alive and superior in nearly every way to iPhoto - it is a totally new program with a learning curve and requires new workflows - these links cover some of the differences and have suggestions for a trouble free migration - : Links to User tips re migrating from iPhoto to Photos

The biggest benefit of Photos is, that it is fully supported and further developed by Apple.

  • On the Plus side for Photos:
    • Photos supports iCloud Photo Library, so you can sync a library across multiple device
    • Photos supports the raw format of new cameras
    • Photos has a better integration of external editors and supports photo editing extensions
    • Some adjustments are better
  • On the Plus side for iPhoto:
    • iPhoto has better batch editing tools for metadata
    • iPhoto has more flexible layouts for books
    • iPhoto has a better support for metadata in projects,so we can easily add titles in slideshows, for example.

But iPhoto will sooner or later completely stop working, while Photos is getting better with every new release.
