10.13.4 Displaylink no longer working

After upgrading to 10.13.4 my display link monitors no longer function. I've tried updating the displaylink drivers but this does not return the functionality to display multiple monitors that existed in 10.13.3. As a consequence I had to roll back to 10.13.3 to get my monitors to function again. This rollback also confirms that the issue appears to be in 10.13.4. I've got a very large number of MACs that I can not permit this upgrade to be deployed to in my enterprise as it will cause enormous support issues. Does some one have a fix as to how to get this minor bug fix update to function with displaylink?

MacBook Pro TouchBar and Touch ID, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

JPyre,

If you think that display link does not work on 10.13 then your mistaken as I am currently typing this on 10.13.3 with Display link. While Displaylink docks are cheaper its the reason why they are commercially accepted by business such as yours (and mine) in the first place. The fact that Apple does not recognise this fact isolates them from the enterprise eco-system and as you have pointed out now results in our company needing to utilise much more expensive products just to support Apple in an enterprise. Given that Apple is the minority in Enterprise asking to spend additional funding just results in the phase out of apple machines in this environment. Instead of ignoring the ecosystem that the devices are used within Apple needs to embrace it to get growth and acceptance.

So I suppose your solution is to spend $500AU or roughly 20% of the price of my MAC on getting a thunderbolt 3 dock as the solution rather than Apple continue to support the software in 10.13.3 that works and functions with Displaylink?? This is a point release and the release notes do not call out that they are breaking functionality. Fine for a major release but an item that is intended to be a bug fix should not cease existing use.

my apologies. you're correct when it comes to portable. i have one that's a micro-b that i hadn't even considered. i was talking strictly about extended desktop monitors and for that, the adapter works. i did find a couple of usb 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapters, but the cheapest one was $80. sorry that i wasn't more helpful. that said, now i have to find a solution for my portable... 😟

There was two months of warning. Maybe somewhere.
AppsStore sold me DuetDisplay 07 Mar 2018. There was no warning that this software don't work on new OS version which was already in beta. I bought also iPad for that.
I lost also possibility to use DisplayLink. This is not so big problem because I had already ordered iMac Pro before 10.13.4 (I wouldn't do it after that). At the desk I can use multiple displays. But with MacBook I can't use two displays and this is big problem. I know solution - it's to use Windows on notebook.

JPyre - you are a fool. There is nothing undocumented or hacked about it - stop trolling. Displaylink is used by tens of thousands of enterprise users, it is a very valuable extension that enables a lot of add-on capability , inexpensively. For instance, in POS terminals. Try to find an affordable small (12") monitor that works with DisplayPort - you can't.

I can tell you that this adapter does permit an HDMI display to operate from a DP port on a macmini 2012 on 10.13.4, BUT there is no way to get any of the adapters I found to deliver a third display operational from USB. You have to downgrade to 10.13.3 and never again trust apple's "improvements" in new macOS releases. They just dont tell you when they are actually "downgrading" . They are a big company and dont care about customers I guess.

Although I am one of the "deplorables" , I have used display link and noticed that there must be thousands of us since the adapters are now offered very cheaply in china. There is no other way to get a third monitor on a mac mini that I have found that apple supports. I will NEVER upgrade a macOS again until months and months later and all these little "downgrades" are uncovered and evaluated.

I tried many display link products, and none of them worked. I am using a macmini 2012, though, not a portable. On my mac mini there is a thunderbolt1 port and an HDMI port for displays. I am using two HDMI displays, one of which runs off the HDMI port on the computer, and the other runs on one of those thunderbolt to VGA/HDMI combination adapters. That works. BUT, to get a third display to work using any of the display link products that run from USB- game over with 10.13.4 mac OS.

Agreed. This isn't just limited to adapters and docking stations. I recently bought an ASUS portable monitor in order to have 2 displays on the road. It plugs in directly with a USB cable to my MacBook Pro. These monitors rely on DisplayLink drivers as well.

Now you can read responses to peoples questions on Amazon about these monitors and if they work well with Macs. The answer is now,: "they did until 10.13.4".

I ended up having to go all the way back to Sierra, as I just bought a 2016 refurb from Apple only a month back and didn't have a TimeMachine backup yet of my new machine. So maddening.

Apr 20, 2018 9:56 AM in response to emandude

Fortunately, I did have a time machine backup on an external hard drive. I was nervous about reverting to 10.13.3 macOS, but I studied a bit on it and restored from the day BEFORE I "downgraded !" to 10.13.4. It took about 4 hours to complete everything, and then I had to restore individually from the most recent time machine backup the files I had changed the morning of the restore operation.

All in all, it was a learning experience. NEVER just trust Apple that what they call an "upgrade" is REALLY an "upgrade". They dont tell us whats NOT going to work with their "upgrade". The computer was working just fine and I had to go mess it up thinking there was something really great about 10.13.4 just because Apple was touting it. Never again. Time machine was a great thing they did, so I give them credit for that. I suggest everyone uses it. It will save your hind end on that day when disaster strikes...

Apple should have been thrilled that there was a way with display link to have multiiple monitors on at least a macmini. Instead I say they were jealous they didnt think of it, so decided to render it and the people who made it useless.

I get the message.

I will just have to live with 10.13.3 and never upgrade again. Too bad. I hope apple doesnt waste a lot on their "upgrade/downgrade", and I sure hope they dont find a way to invade my computer and keep it from running the current system.

Apr 20, 2018 10:45 AM in response to ushj

Wow, I hope that works. $48 would be a willing price out of this hole. However, in the print below the item, I quote: "*Note: Only 1 video output (HDMI or DisplayPort) can be used at a time. Does not support both outputs simultaneously!!!". So I sincerely hope it works but I fear it won't. Please let us know.

I didn't upgrade to Sierra until May of last year. I installed 10.12.5 and was almost immediately hit by a bug that was fixed two weeks later in 10.12.6. Although I keep the latest High Sierra beta running on a test machine, Sierra is on my primary machine. I have no plans to switch to High Sierra until I buy a new machine, probably later this year.

Apr 20, 2018 11:55 AM in response to etresoft

When I first "upgraded" to High Sierra on my iMac I was not able to connect to the internet. I had to downgrade back to Sierra to get any connection. I finally upgraded to High Sierra again when the most recent version came out. As a result I did not have any back ups with High Sierra other than 10.13.4.

Moral of the story, High Sierra is just all around horrible.
