10.13.4 Displaylink no longer working

After upgrading to 10.13.4 my display link monitors no longer function. I've tried updating the displaylink drivers but this does not return the functionality to display multiple monitors that existed in 10.13.3. As a consequence I had to roll back to 10.13.3 to get my monitors to function again. This rollback also confirms that the issue appears to be in 10.13.4. I've got a very large number of MACs that I can not permit this upgrade to be deployed to in my enterprise as it will cause enormous support issues. Does some one have a fix as to how to get this minor bug fix update to function with displaylink?

JPyre,

If you think that display link does not work on 10.13 then your mistaken as I am currently typing this on 10.13.3 with Display link. While Displaylink docks are cheaper its the reason why they are commercially accepted by business such as yours (and mine) in the first place. The fact that Apple does not recognise this fact isolates them from the enterprise eco-system and as you have pointed out now results in our company needing to utilise much more expensive products just to support Apple in an enterprise. Given that Apple is the minority in Enterprise asking to spend additional funding just results in the phase out of apple machines in this environment. Instead of ignoring the ecosystem that the devices are used within Apple needs to embrace it to get growth and acceptance.

So I suppose your solution is to spend $500AU or roughly 20% of the price of my MAC on getting a thunderbolt 3 dock as the solution rather than Apple continue to support the software in 10.13.3 that works and functions with Displaylink?? This is a point release and the release notes do not call out that they are breaking functionality. Fine for a major release but an item that is intended to be a bug fix should not cease existing use.

There is a security update out for 10.13.4. There is nothing in the release notes that says anything about displaylink being fixed in it. Look forward to hearing anything from anyone if it does. I'm not going near an apple update until the display link issue is fixed I simple can do without the wasted time and effort to revert to 10.13.3 (again). Anyone brave enough to install let us know if its fixed.

Apple got rid of display link for their own reasons, and wont backtrack on that EVER. All we can do is try and protect ourselves from Apple at this point. If they make their changes so that my present equipment doesnt work anymore, I will just have to buy other equipment so I can continue on with what I need to do. Apple isnt the only game in town for sure.

I use Mac for home and I use display link pluggable dock.

This is not just a corporate use issue, this is a problem with Apple. When they pull these kinds of things when you wake up and your setup that you paid a lot of money for no longer works, you have no trust ever going with their products.

It's like Apple goes out of its way to make their products not work with other systems. I have zero trust in what Apple may do the next day.. And their customer's interest is not what they care about.

If Microsoft did this, Apple would've mocked them on TV for years.

Shame..

I had the same issue (Macbook Pro 2017 13" with touchbar) I run multiple displays through a SIIG dock with 4 display ports, just updated to Mac OS 10.13.4 last night and have wasted half the day in the office today restoring back to 10.13.3, I can't work without the additional displays, as I'm sure MANY professionals that are shelling out $2200.00 for a laptop would say the same.

SIIG is stating that Apple has removed the ability to run video over USB, which all the ports on the macbook pro are (USB-C). Haven't tried my apple adapter with a single HDMI because I use more than one external display. Very frustrated and stuck on 10.13.3. Won't be updating until apple restores the functionality on future OS updates.

Apple you have really dropped the ball on this one and need to get this fixed.

It is very disappointing. I for one would not have "upgraded" if there was a warning this would kill mu USB video.

I just have it running to display my security cameras off the main screen so I can see anyone coming. My workshop is in the back yard. Nothing fancy in the way of graphics.

There have been some who say this in not Apple's problem but I see it as fully in their court. Something that was working is no longer. The only variable is the upgrade.

Apply is getting just as callous as MS.

As I said in starting, very disappointing!

I have been using Apple products since the Mac Classic days. Thumbs down Apple that you are not at all interested in fixing this. Another indication that you have got too big and lost your connection with you user base.

I am gifting this 27" Mac to my son so the USB video problem will not matter on this machine, but will in no way update my other Macs! I would like to turn off all future updates if I can.

There is certainly a wealth of misinformation on this thread.

The truth: DisplayLink docks and USB boxes work fine in High Sierra through OS 10.13.3.

With 10.13.4, Apple broke all 3rd party display options with one exception. This includes eGPU over Thunderbolt 1 & 2, Duet Dock and all other iPad display apps and all boxes tat require DisplayLink Drivers.

The only exception is eGPU over Thunderbolt 3, to which Apple is reinforcing their commitment as announced at the WWDC.

Apple has not acknowledged any bug and it’s very possible this was done on purpose as eGPU over Thunderbolt 1 & 2 has been problematic. Easiest way to deal with that is to end all support.

DisplayLink and a few of the eGPU card makers are trying to come up with drivers to wrk around this. Duet Dock seems to think Apple will “fix” this. If Apple doesn’t think it’s broken, I wouldn’t hold my breath. As for the others, they may or may not come up with a solution.

The DisplayLink 4.3 drivers provide a kludge that some may be able to use—I‘m not one of them. For those who can, go go go.

I’d like to see drivers that reenable my box. I make my living with my Mac and am stuck at OS 10.13.3 until a solution is released or I buy a new Mac (not yet). 10.13.3 is a stable OS and meets my needs for now.

A PC is not an option for me. The CRM I use works much better on a Mac and runs poorly on the PC. Been here, done that, no thanks! Never again.

Well given that its over 5 months now and there is no actual dates from Displaylink I think its time to move on as I doubt this will ever be addressed. 10.13.4 simply killed the market that existed. Has anyone found a good USB-C solution that works well, is mobile and does not cost an arm and a leg?

There are USB C to HDMI adapters as well as USB C docks with HDMI ports. There are limitations on the quality of the video what they support if you do not have a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 through USB C (if you have been using DisplayLink boxes, it should be comparable).

This are also simple USB C to HDMI adapters such as this:

If you have Thunderbolt 1 or 2 available, there are inexpensive adapters that will give better video results. Like USB C to HDMI above, these are adapters, not 3rd party solutions—if you have the port, these work fine. There's no advantage to the Apple branded unit as there is no proprietary chip inside.

A few Macs have TB 3 available through USB C: This includes all Mid-2017 and later iMacs, iMac Pros and MacBook Pros.

All 3rd party monitor solutions were killed in OS 10.13.4 — 10.13.5 except eGPU over Thunderbolt 3. This may change if DisplayLink and some of the eGPU card makers write new drivers. Even if they do, will those be forward compatible into 10.14?

I'm with you on this. Even if new drivers are written, USB 2 monitor boxes are yesterday's tech. I need to run 2 monitors off of my iMac, currently impossible without one being USB 2. With any iMac newer than mid 2012, that isn't an issue plus they support Metal graphics as required with OS 10.14.

Jun 13, 2018 6:44 AM in response to nsavvidis

The situation is unchanged in OS 10.13.5 and the 10.14 beta.

This is a byproduct of Apple ending eGPU support over Thunderbolt 1 & 2 which had been problematic. Apple is unlikely to fix this because they don’t think it‘s a bug.

So, will DisplayLink be able to write a compatible driver? They’ve had months now.

Since my 2010 iMac is incompatible with 10.14, I’m in the market for a 2012 or later anyway, With a pair of TB ports, I will no longer need my DisplayLink box to run two external monitors.

I am having the same problem at the company I work for. We are exclusively Mac based, and we have quite a few computers from 2012 to the latest and greatest. Many of the administrators want to have two external devices but they are using MacBook Air computers. Before 10.13.4, I connected one thunderbolt to HDMI, and a USB3 to VGA and everything worked perfectly. I have successfully downgraded two computers I installed 10.13.4 right away and found the break but now I have to make sure to never upgrade older computers with this setup past 10.13.3.

Moving forward, I'll make sure new administrators get a MacBook Pro which I can install two external displays, but the multiple adapters to get the job done is ... not pretty.

I didn't think of that. I have a bootable USB thumb drive with the 10.13.2 installer. I tested downgrading on a test machine before I performed the actual downgrade, and in both real cases I ran a full backup of the computer first. The only side-effect that I encountered in the test and the actual downgrade was the keychain needed to be reset.
