10.13.4 Displaylink no longer working

After upgrading to 10.13.4 my display link monitors no longer function. I've tried updating the displaylink drivers but this does not return the functionality to display multiple monitors that existed in 10.13.3. As a consequence I had to roll back to 10.13.3 to get my monitors to function again. This rollback also confirms that the issue appears to be in 10.13.4. I've got a very large number of MACs that I can not permit this upgrade to be deployed to in my enterprise as it will cause enormous support issues. Does some one have a fix as to how to get this minor bug fix update to function with displaylink?

Getting disappointed with Apple for not following up to resolve this issue with USB DisplayPorts which is used in our company to connect both our PC and Macbook (prior to MacOS 10.13.3) to our keyboard/mouse and monitor. I am stopping any future updates on MacOS and staying with MacOS 10.13.3. I wish there is a way to stop the prompting and the upgrade notice for 10.13.6 and stop future MacOS updates until Apple solve this issue.

Since Apple did this on purpose, expecting them to undo it is wishful thinking. Apple has made it very clear that they now support eGPU over Thunderbolt 3 only, This requires a late 2017 iMac or MacBook Pro.

DisplayLink and other 3rd party GPU solutions need to find their own workarounds.

DisplayLink has a beta driver that allows one extended display over AirPlay. Unfortunately for me, AirPlay is not supported on Macs prior to 2011.

Perhaps DisplayLink will develop a driver that resolves this issue. Since my 2010 iMac will not run OS 10.14, it’s time for me to upgrade anyway. The moment I do, this ceases to be a concern for me.

Apple,

Tons of developers using your laptops and your language , creating emerging technologies are using Display link, if these issues don't get resolved they will result in tech companies both moving away from the apple platform and mentioning that they spent thousands of dollars in investment only to have apple make the technology obsolete and that hampered the progress and design of the technology.

i am sorry but short of wipe my machine i have begun using my windows units more and will be changing over any of my employees that cannot get their macs working again.

sorry but this is getting sad that you guys are going proprietary again, after a good 10 years of bringing back the customer via multiple avenues of use.

While I sympathize, your little rant says nothing and means even less. You don't say what Macs you use, how old they are nor what Display Link equipped devices you use.

Moving on...

What Apple has taken away, they will restore for most users. DisplayLink has announced a beta that enables full functionality in OS 10.14.

Developers/users with access to Apple’s fifth developer preview of 10.14 Mojave, released on 30th July, will see full support has now been restored for multiple extended DisplayLink displays where DisplayLink driver v4.3 beta 5 is installed. We are doing wide scale testing of v4.3 beta against this preview and will release a new driver upon general availability of 10.14.

Users of 10.13.4-10.13.6 should also use v4.3 beta 5 as it contains a workaround to enable one extended USB display (720p or 1080p). An FAQ details how to enable Apple AirPlay with DisplayLink display for extend or mirror mode.

Users on macOS 10.13.3 and earlier should remain for the time being with DisplayLink driver 4.1 to maintain full extended display functionality.

Unfortunately, it does nothing for those of us with 2009–2010 iMacs that can't support Air Play and 2009–2012 Macs incapable of installing Mojave. Air Play requires a 2011 Mac and Mojave requires a GPU that supports Metal graphics.

All of that is good but for those who are maybe not going to be able to upgrade to 10.14, which there are situations in a commercial environment where that will be likely, but are on 10.13.4 or higher it seems as if there will not be a solution. The "workaround" with using AirPlay is not stable and only sometimes works. This means that MacBook Airs from 2017 can only use one external monitor which isn't a lot of screen real-estate. Sure you can use an ultrawide monitor but unless you get something that is 4k, which are expensive, then the scaling does not give you the full advantage of the amount of screen that you get. People have a right to be asking questions.
