can not sync photos with ios 11.3 and itunes 12.7.4

I downloaded itunes 12.7.4 and ios 11.3 and now I can not sync my photos to my iphone X, Iphone 8 plus, Ipod Touch or Ipad Pro with my PC running Windows 10. It gets to Step 5 of 6 and just sits there frozen at "Reading Photo's from "Pictures" and will not finish the transfer of the photos to my devices and finish the sync. I did not have a problem until the new operating system was released. Anyone having this issue and is there a fix??

iPhone X, Windows 10

So until Apple fixes this, here is a workaround: Downgrade to iTunes 12.7.3! It definitely is an iTunes 12.7.4-issue. After downgrading to 12.7.3, everything is working again.

So you have to manually uninstall 12.7.4 and download 12.7.3 from Apple (just google for the version number, you'll find it).

Problem is that you have to go back to an auto-saved iTunes Library file from when you had 12.7.3 installed. So after installing but before starting 12.7.3 you have to first rename the current "iTunes Library.itl" file to something like "iTunes Library 12-7.4.itl" and then go to the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and take the presumably latest autosaved itl-file and move it one folder up and rename it to "iTunes Library.itl".

(Of course this means that you'll lose all changes you made to your iTunes library since updating to 12.7.4)

On Friday I was trying to sync a new mini iPad to the older version of iTunes. Photos weren’t syncing and I spent half the day working with Apple support. Decided it must be the iPad so returned it to the store and got a new one. Managed to put some photos on the new iPad. Made the mistake of updating iTunes before my iPhone synced and now the photo sync doesn’t work on any device I have. I don’t want to revert to the older version of iTunes as I will loose all the playlists I have created for my music. Also read of others who reverted back and it didn’t fix the issue.

Surely Apple will have a fix soon!

I've just moved my ipod photo cache to a different folder and re-synched my phone. The photos are on the phone but only viewable via 'collections' and they are catalogued under the date they were taken which is not very useful for some of the things I had stored in albums as I do not know what dates they were taken on.

Definitely iTunes as I synched the iPod Touch this morning (all photo albums in place) and have only updated iTunes this evening so it has only affected my phone.

This was worth a try so I tested it out on my iPad Pro and success, albums re-appeared. So decided to have a go with my iPhone.

Connected, went to photos and probably because I'd removed the iPod photo cache the sync section was now set not to sync. Changed it and selected the folders I usually synch, when I hit apply was told this would remove existing photos. And lo and behold after the synch my albums were back with all the pictures. I didn't, however, re-boot the phone.

I then went back to photos to add another folder and at the moment looks like I am stuck on reading photos from pictures again! But at least the important folders are back. The contents of the folder I was adding are there as the total number of photos has increased, but the folder does not show so this is just a work round.

Just tested the iPad by adding another folder and got the same result, the photos have gone on to the iPad but the folder doesn't show (stuck on reading photos from pictures).

A follow-up here to my posted steps in how to eventually get photos synced via the newest version of iTunes:

As I had previously stated, performing all of these tedious steps DID successfully get me back to where I was before the iOS 11.3/iTunes 12.7.4 tragic combo was foisted upon us all. FY, I am syncing with Windows 10 to both an iPhone X and an iPad Pro. After performing my recommended procedure, I eventually resynced approx 1200 of my photos in (25 different sub folders), I did notice that the overall TIME it took to complete a routine sync was somewhat lengthened. Before, “Step 5 of 6 Reading photos....” had taken 10secs or so, before moving on to the next “Analyzing.....” step. but the “Reading...” step now takes me between 1-2 MINUTES before it moves on to completion. That said, ALL my photos WERE synced successfully, and were in their correct folders. And one thing I didn’t mention (which I saw that some others had also encountered, and has occurred with previous versions of iTunes) was that after closing the iTunes software, you weren’t able to START it again, without logging off/back in, or restarting Windows.

For many of you who tediously reverted BACK to iTunes 12.7.3 to attempt to rectify the situation, I’m sorry to hear of your pain. This entire problem is a direct result of an horrific conflict between iTunes 12.7.4 and iOS 11.3...PERIOD! I just now saw on the Web that Apple is besieged with bug error complaints about iOS 11.3 and will likely be pushing out a NEW update to iOS 11.3.1 as early as this week to attempt to address all these complaints of failures! Apple support? NO! They told me they were “looking into the problem”, but as TOO often, they didn’t have so much as ONE clue about how to HELP us (news flash there, eh?!) All of YOU, out there in the Apple Community, are MUCH better advisors in helping to make our devices work as they SHOULD. Considering the big $$ we all pay for them to begin with...a crying shame for sure.

So hang in there everyone. Slim hope here that a new iOS 11.3.1 might help even a little bit. But keep your discovered “fixes” coming, Apple should pay us ALL for proving them to the Community!!

I deleted my photos too but they are still on my computer. I might try, as recently suggested, bringing a few at a time. Yesterday, the Senior Apple Engineer asked me to send him report from iTunes and my MSInfo file from my PC. He said that Engineering requested it. He viewed what I was doing on my screen real time. I have an open ticket and he will be my 1-1 Tech until this gets resolved. I suspect it won't be fixed until a new iTunes and/or iOS comes out.

Try this from ErgoEdbo (listed further back in this set of posts). I found it doesn't completely solve the problem as it only works once but it should at least get the first synch of photos back into albums. I followed the instructions explicitly for my iPad, then did my phone but without re-booting the phone - further synchs on both devices haven't removed the albums but new photos don't go into the albums nor can I add any more albums, but the new photos and contents of further albums do to on to the device.

Other than that we have to wait for Apple to update iTunes - which it seems they are doing as they've had so many reports of this problem.

Step 1: Go to your target photo folder (which includes all of its sub folders, and DELETE the iPod Photo Cache folder.

Step 2. Perform a sync on your device, but UNCHECK the “Sync Photos” box, when prompted, select “remove all photos from device” (this action will erase everything from your device). Complete the sync.

Step 3: After disconnecting USB from PC, perform a “hard reboot” of phone or pad & restart the device.

Step 4: Begin a new sync, this time, CHECKING the box to “Sync Photos” (this action will result in recopying ALL of your target folders & photos, and can take some time to complete, as it would if you were setting up a brand new device)

(Above steps copied from ErgoEdbo's post - if they do help you please mark their post as helpful.

Denise,

This is a followup to my previously suggested "fix steps" that you kindly re-posted here:

As I had outlined earlier, I am syncing from a current & properly updated Windows 10 machine, and I'm syncing from iTunes 12.7.4 to my iPhone X and an iPad Pro. For me, at least, all my folders & sub-folders DID successfully sync on BOTH devices. After letting everything sit for a day, today, I attempted to sync both devices once again..even after having added both NEW sub-folders & photos, as well as a few additional new photos into existing sub-folders, and. amazingly, EVERYTHING completed properly, and within a reasonable amount of time, and with all NEW sub-folders & images into existing ones being present and accounted for! Not sure how long photo syncing will perform like this as it should, but fingers are crossed for sure. And I DO kind of feel it's important to perform my suggested "hard reboot" step in my instructions because that often can clear any residual buffer/memory bugs before proceeding.

And then, today I just happened to look at my iPhone X's screen only to see one of my many home screen icons blithely sitting right there on TOP of other app icons, slightly askance!!! It took me a great deal of effort to get the "rouge" icon BACK to a safe, open spot on my home screen. I have also now noticed that many "innocent images" existing in my Camera Roll Album have now been randomly RENAMED to things like HQJYZKRD.JPG Gawd! This iOS 11.3 firmware has been a REAL nightmare, and iTunes 12.7.4 doesn't seem to know which end is up either because of it, likely because of iOS 11.3. I'm now truly burned out in trying to chase down ANY more fixes for the sheer myriad of astounding problems Apple has foisted upon us all!

I have read on the web that Apple engineers are now actually working on repairing the damage done hardware & software-wise, but I'm afraid they will NEVER be able to repair the damage done to all of us Apple Users' faith in them. To quote Trump's many tweets...SAD. (sorry)
