iTunes 12.7.4 Album Artwork Display

Hello, is anyone else having album artwork display issues under iTunes 12.7.4.76? Under Albums view not all of my album art thumbnails are displaying. I tried deleting the artwork cache but I am still having the same problem. The artwork appears to still be imbedded in the file, but it won't display. It's probably a bug and I have sent a report but I want to see if anyone else is having the same issue?

It will likely be fixed with the next release of iTunes. Or the one after that. You should use Feedback - iTunes - Apple so Apple can get an idea of how many users this issue is affecting. You might also want to go back to iTunes 12.7.3.

Step by step guide to rolling back to iTunes 12.7.3 on a Mac.

  1. Close iTunes
  2. Install iTunes 12.6.4, but don't run it
  3. Open Home > Music > iTunes > Previous iTunes Libraries in Finder, or the relevant folder if library is stored elsewhere.
  4. Locate the file with the date when you updated to iTunes 12.7.4, copy it
  5. Go up one level to the iTunes folder and paste
  6. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library NEW.itl
  7. Rename the dated file as iTunes Library.itl
  8. Install iTunes 12.7.3
  9. Open iTunes

Your library should be restored to the exact state it was in when you closed it prior to installing iTunes 12.7.4. You can add the media folder to the library to import any additions since then.

The only thing that makes me feel better is I'm not the only one this is happening to. It's just been frustrating that it's been about 2 months since this happened and there is still no fix. Surely Apple can figure this out? I definitely wouldn't subscribe to Apple Music since iTunes is such a mess. I wonder how many other people feel the same and this could be costing them business? I have Spotify and their album covers always display. Come on Apple!

Not only did I update to 12.7.5.9 to be disappointed to no fix on iTunes blank artwork, but when I load an album to my iPhone 8, it shows up in Music as the correct album, with another random albums artwork. This is annoying to us that take time and effort to make our files neat and correct. FIX THIS NOW Apple, you can't attach these large price tags to you products, then have bugs like this. Continued issues like this is where you lose your fan base of those who lean your way due to aesthetics.

itunes lost 75% of my album covers. I "upgraded" to version 12.7.59 with no improvement. I have almost all of the album art imbeded in my music files, but it won't show up in itunes. I don't think itunes looks for album art stored on your computer anymore. I think the only album covers that show, are the few that apple downloads automatically. The proof of this is that some of the album covers are incorrect, even though I have imbeded the correct files in itunes. Two albums that I can think of: Jimi Hendrix Experience ""Are You Experienced" shows the album cover for the Woodstock soundtrack, which I don't even have. John Fogerty Centerfield shows the cover for his Eye of the Zombie album, even though my media folder contains the correct artwork. I am no computer expert, but I think this glitch is by design. They want you to purchase all your music from Apple.

Hardi hit the nail on the head with his(her) response. I've got well over 1500 cds albums and it is only those whose artwork is not 'square' that does not show. I've deleted my entire library and reloaded everything several times and it's always the same problem. Will forward my issue on to Apple and pray for resolution.

Hi everybody. I had a fifteen minute discussion with an Apple agent who remotely logged onto my computer and showed her my 1000+ cd iTunes (12.7.5.9) library. Showed off a significant number of the 'blank squares' and explained that the issue is artwork dimensions. There can be no doubt that Apple is fully aware of this bug. Reverting to a 'previous' library is not a solution at all and I will live with the 'blanks' until the bug is fixed. I understand that actual cd's are not 'square' and that one day some marketing genius decided digital artwork should match the actual thing but the 'square' artwork phenomenon seemed to have been standardized. I've 'Google Image' searched thousands of album covers and obviously 'square' seems to be where it's at.

Wanted to assure anyone interested that Apple is aware of this. My discussion with the agent took place on or @ June 20th.

I've just updated to 12.8, and all of my album artworks are now synced to the wrong albums (e.g. listening to Metallica's Black Album and the artwork showing is for Fall Out Boy's Folie a Deux).

Some of my albums are purchased from iTunes, but the majority of my library is from CD's and downloads that I've spent years acquiring and would not be able to do so again without spending days getting everything catalogued and located. Any ideas on how/if this will be fixed?

Good point, hardti!

However:

Once again, I just checked some covers of old albums that were not visible today. (Sometimes this changes from day to day.) The "Information" of the albums always shows the cover in the cover tab, but in some cases the cover is not displayed when you go back to any kind of overview. I selected some of the covers and checked the resolution. Unfortunately, at least with iTunes 12.8.0.150 the problem is not the square resolution (I usually use 500 x 500), at least this is not the only problem.

Yes. I believe that this may be a bug due to how the images are loaded prior to display.

When the album artwork is being loaded, the display either updates instantly, or some random data is rendered, to be quickly replaced by a blank rectangle. Now click on a playlist, then go back to the album display which did not render correctly: the art now shows up, so iTunes did load it but had trouble rendering it before it was ready to be used.

I believe that the thread which loads the album art in the background and the thread which renders the image may be out of sync, causing the render operation to grab the image before it is ready for display.

Nothing you or me could do anything about it...

This original post from Fortang about was dated March 31, 2019, about iTunes 12.7.4.76.

It's October 8 now and iTunes is at 12.8.0.150. I wonder if they even WANT to fix it. Other posts outside of this one for the same problem go even farther back. (One from Jun 5, 2012.) This needs to WORK without our jumping through hoops and tricks to make it so.
