Microphone not working on iPhone 7

When making phone calls I cannot hear the other person, and they can't hear me. My voice memos app won't let me record anything in order to test the microphone and speakers. If i take a video, there is no sound. I can get sound on previous videos though. Siri can't hear me. I took my phone to the genius bar a couple days ago, and they did a factory reset. It didn't fix the issue. He said he ran diagnostics, and only told me that I should buy a new battery. I just did apple chat, and was told I need to take it in for a hardware issues. Any other ideas? Is this going to cost me a replacement?

I have the issues too, just saw an article on idrop talking about it. It looks to be related to latest SW update messing with the HW. I took the phone in last week (05/04/2018). They ran a few tests, at first, device not supported for them to run test, then they did a network reset and it helped for the test (some type of audio test), it passed them, they said you are good, tired a couple fo calls, worked, about 5 minutes later, got a call from wife, same issues, went back and this time after multiple resets etc, everything failed. Just opened a new Genius bar ticket to have reviewed. As an FYI, you can use bluetooth and it does take calls etc. (temp. solution). It is just from the physical phone that we cannot.

Thanks for your reply but unfortunately I currently live in a country which doesn’t have an Apple store.

For the last couple of weeks, I have read many forums / threads and understood that the issues relate to latest iOS version. As such a new replacement phone wouldn’t do any good and would just waste my time even more.

What on earth its going on here Apple! I’m having the same problem. I work at an Apple Store and we are getting customer every single day with the same problem... Makes me sad this people are paying for an insurance’s deductible and after an update they end up with the same problem... and Apple doesn’t realease any official statemnt about any of this... come on Apple, people are paying over 1K every year for a phone right now and they get a poor support from apple it is embarrassing not to know what to say to our customers...

I’m so angry this is happening to so many of us! I too was just cut off of a phone call where the recipient couldn’t hear anything I was saying. I’m now unable to hear or say anything through voice calls but the calls are going through. My videos have no sound, Siri can’t hear me, voice memo isn’t recognizing any sound. I contacted Apple and to have my phone sent in for repair they wanted over $300 our of warranty. I had absolutely no issues until I updated it and it’s been glitchy ever since and now today I’m completely mute. Do you think a new update will come out to fix this because if not I’ll be looking into Samsung for my next phone I think, I’ve had nothing but grief for a couple years now.

We should all gather to make the community know how apple is failing on helping us. I own a advertising company and I can use all your testimonies to create a video and make it viral in all the social media platforms. Because this is a software issue. Not hardware.

I personally had my phone working fine the day before I did the update. Once update was done, it stops working, I call the apple support. They said my phone was no longer in warranty. When my warranty ended that day before when that problem happen. Now its upto us to pay them to fix it. They are creating updates for them to make money. A huge company didn't honor my warranty because it expired one day before I call them.

Contact me, will make a big advertising video and make it viral.

⚠⚠⚠ I have two iPhone 7 128gb. I personally use my Jet Black iPhone 7 primarily, so I try to avoid updating till I absolutely HAVE to because of cases like this. I updated my Gold iPhone 7 to 11.3 and went to sleep, however I did not update my Jet Black because it has my alarms on it. The next morning my Gold wouldn't let me use Siri, record audio what so ever, people couldn't hear me on FaceTime, I was frustrated. Luckily, I repair my iPhones, so I used Apple replacements, a charging/docking port, a display, and a battery, none of these repairs fixed my issues, I am now beyond frustrated. My Jet Black, still on 11.2, worked perfectly, no issues at all. I believe all of these cases are very suspicious, seems like they're ruining our iPhones using an update, so that we're forced to buy a new/replacement iPhone. I'm annoyed ⚠⚠⚠

I had the same issue with my 7 Plus. I took it to the Apple store and they replaced my phone with a new one. My phone was well out of warranty, too. Apple has identified this microphone issue and is taking responsibility for it. As long as there isn’t blatant/significant damage to your phone (like a broken/cracked screen/serious water damage) Apple will pay the freight on either fixing your phone, or replacing it.

I am also facing the same problem. My iPhone is out of warranty and now service Center is telling me it will coat you a replacement. Outside I enquirered, the price for replacing microphone if is about 1/4 the price Apple service Center is charging. I don’t know what to do. I also don’t want to get it done from outside. Help me.

Hello,

I had the same issue on my iPhone 7. I took my phone to the Apple store and said that I believed my iPhone microphone issue was part of a larger problem that Apple has now recognized. See link: https://www.macrumors.com/2018/05/04/apple-aware-of-iphone-7-mic-issue-ios-11-3/

The technician said they were aware of the issue and that my phone could be replaced out of warranty if a specific error code came up when running diagnostics. The error code has to either say "device could not detect dock" or "accessory not supported" in order for them to replace the phone. Fortunately, my phone had this error code and they replaced it with out question. My sister also had the same problem. She went to a different Apple store and the technician just confirmed that the speaker button was grayed out when making a phone call (described in article). Just this alone was enough for him to replace the phone out of warranty.

Every Apple store is different. I would suggest printing out the article and bring it just in case they attempt to blame you for the microphone no longer working. Just state that your phone has the same exact issues as described in the article and that you would like them to run a diagnostic. Good luck!

I was at Apple over the weekend, both my husband and I encountered the same problem a few weeks apart so we took our phones in to be looked at. What they’ll do is run a diagnostics test on your phone, which will fail. They will then exam the outside of your phone, if the phone is in perfect physical condition; aka no cracks in the screen, missing buttons etc they will offer you a new phone in exchange of your old one and wave the warranty. If there is any physical damage they will require you to pay to repair the damage first, then they will give you a whole new phone. They replaced my husbands no problem but because mine had a tiny crack in the screen they refused to do it without a screen replacement which costs $200. To buy out my contract was actually cheaper so this is what I did and actually switched to a Samsung on a new contract. Bye bye Apple!
