Microphone not working on iPhone 7

When making phone calls I cannot hear the other person, and they can't hear me. My voice memos app won't let me record anything in order to test the microphone and speakers. If i take a video, there is no sound. I can get sound on previous videos though. Siri can't hear me. I took my phone to the genius bar a couple days ago, and they did a factory reset. It didn't fix the issue. He said he ran diagnostics, and only told me that I should buy a new battery. I just did apple chat, and was told I need to take it in for a hardware issues. Any other ideas? Is this going to cost me a replacement?

Hello,

I had the same issue on my iPhone 7. I took my phone to the Apple store and said that I believed my iPhone microphone issue was part of a larger problem that Apple has now recognized. See link: https://www.macrumors.com/2018/05/04/apple-aware-of-iphone-7-mic-issue-ios-11-3/

The technician said they were aware of the issue and that my phone could be replaced out of warranty if a specific error code came up when running diagnostics. The error code has to either say "device could not detect dock" or "accessory not supported" in order for them to replace the phone. Fortunately, my phone had this error code and they replaced it with out question. My sister also had the same problem. She went to a different Apple store and the technician just confirmed that the speaker button was grayed out when making a phone call (described in article). Just this alone was enough for him to replace the phone out of warranty.

Every Apple store is different. I would suggest printing out the article and bring it just in case they attempt to blame you for the microphone no longer working. Just state that your phone has the same exact issues as described in the article and that you would like them to run a diagnostic. Good luck!

Apple really dropped the ball on this one. Tried out a refurb'd 7 Plus w/ Virgin Mobile back in early January. Same issue....phone updated when I booted up, then it promptly bricked the microphone when updating to iOS 12. Wasted 3 hours of Virgin Mobile trying to figure out what was going on, with them just sending me to Apple Genius Bar....and of course the "genius" there put my phone on her diagnostic tester. And within 2 minutes, she pretty much said...."yeah this has been an issue since a previous update"! I think she realized what she said and then quickly tried to "Ooops" it away, but it was a pretty frank admission that this was on them. "No longer under warranty" as a refurb....so they weren't about to throw me any bones. Nothing wrong with the phone until the update. The sucky thing is I had to wait around to see that 'genius'....when someone probably could have just told me what I needed to hear.

Good thing Virgin Mobile had a 30-day money back guarantee....so I promptly returned that bad boy to Indiana. And glad that it finally forced me off VM as a carrier. Just ponied up and joined my family plan, traded in my SE, and walked away with an XR for $450. So in a round about way....things worked out ok.

Huge debacle on Apple's part. They can't afford more blunders like that with one of their bread and butter products...because they are losing ground with better versions of Windows and Chromebooks floating around now. The computer section of the Apple store is gradually getting spaced out to the iPad and iPhone.

Same here with my 7 plus 256gb. Went to Verizon. They said apple problem. Went to apple and they said Verizon problem. I pressed and they acknowledged issues but said since out of warranty would have to pay 350 or so for repair. I was like... apple broke this phone and the arrogant “genius” was so completely dismissive with a take it or leave it attitude that I switched to Samsung galaxy S9 plus and after a week I love it. First android phone since having owned every iPhone from 4-7. This “genius” lost an 20+ year apple customer for life.

Same problem! After a week of calls where the other person couldn’t hear me and my service provider determining it wasn’t the service, I went to Apple. Three hours later and several diagnostic tests they couldn’t find anything wrong but gave me a new phone. Same problem with the new phone but today I saw the articles about the iOS 11.3 problems and went back to Apple. They were not willing to acknowledge that it could be a hardware problem caused by the software update but, again, gave me a new phone. So we’ll see how this one does. It’s hard to determine when the mic problem isn’t consistent. Apple needs to take responsibility for the problem and provide a solution.

⚠⚠⚠ I have two iPhone 7 128gb. I personally use my Jet Black iPhone 7 primarily, so I try to avoid updating till I absolutely HAVE to because of cases like this. I updated my Gold iPhone 7 to 11.3 and went to sleep, however I did not update my Jet Black because it has my alarms on it. The next morning my Gold wouldn't let me use Siri, record audio what so ever, people couldn't hear me on FaceTime, I was frustrated. Luckily, I repair my iPhones, so I used Apple replacements, a charging/docking port, a display, and a battery, none of these repairs fixed my issues, I am now beyond frustrated. My Jet Black, still on 11.2, worked perfectly, no issues at all. I believe all of these cases are very suspicious, seems like they're ruining our iPhones using an update, so that we're forced to buy a new/replacement iPhone. I'm annoyed ⚠⚠⚠

I posted this on another thread. I have exactly the same problem being described by others after updating ios. Microphones not working, cannot make or receive calls, cannot record voice memos or make videos with sound, doesn't recognize headphones etc. No damage to the phone ever. Authorized service centre says $469 to fix (this is in Canada). Apple says tough luck even though the cause is either an Apple software bug or an Apple hardware defect. The phone is only a year and a half but is out of warranty. Bought LOTS of Apple products over the years but no more

Worst part of it all!! Listen to this. At iStore the technician told me he isnt upgrading to ios11.4 due to the issues experiences by iphone 7 and 7plus users are experiencing. He also admittes Apple has calles a recall on these devices. It is all over the internet!! So again why am I paying,?!! I hate apple. I will make sure everyone else does too. I will post on youtube, there forum and any public forum every single day

The same thing happened to me. The iOS update broke the mic/speaker on my perfectly functioning iPhone 7+. It is absolutely useless and dangerous to have a phone that does not make or receive phone calls. The Apple employee at the Genius Bar did one diagnostic and knew immediately that the issue was the iOS damaging the iPhone 7+. He said that Apple knows about this issue and will “override the service fee” to fix it, but I have to call Apple. So I did call Apple, per their OWN EMPLOYEE’s instructions, and they denied the problem, denied that anyone has ever had this issue, and denied that they covered the service fee previously. FRAUD.

Apple Support was unable to fix this so I went to the Genius Bar. The latest software update was made to specifically address the audio issues on the iPhone 7. Ours has already had the update and still won’t work. According to staff, Apple has issued the software fix so if the phone still isn’t working it must be a hardware issue and they are recommending a replacement. Our phones are out of warranty by two months, but yet we hadn’t paid off each phone at $1k ea. Our only recourse is to buy more phones. This is ridiculous. Apple had such a great reputation and is throwing it down the drain. No wonder why so many have already left them heading for Samsung.
