Microphone not working on iPhone 7

When making phone calls I cannot hear the other person, and they can't hear me. My voice memos app won't let me record anything in order to test the microphone and speakers. If i take a video, there is no sound. I can get sound on previous videos though. Siri can't hear me. I took my phone to the genius bar a couple days ago, and they did a factory reset. It didn't fix the issue. He said he ran diagnostics, and only told me that I should buy a new battery. I just did apple chat, and was told I need to take it in for a hardware issues. Any other ideas? Is this going to cost me a replacement?

SAME except AT&T said that they are tracking all phones with similar issue. My daughters did the same. Mine started when I did the most recent update. I am out of warranty, but have insurance. AT&T escalated my service to Apple. Apple denied that anyone else is having this issue and told me that I likely got water in the speaker and told me it would be $385 to fix it. AND couldn't tell me when I would get my phone back. I took my issue to Nations Cellular (a reputable service in Hot Springs... Always is honest and tells you if it can or can't be fixed... with up front prices.) He said this is a regular occurring problem with 7 plus and he has little success with fixing it. He said that it keeps appearing to be a BAD CHIP. And that usually happens on the updates.. He said that it is NOT my speaker. He recommended using my insurance to replace it if I choose to stay with APPLE. I am so frustrated. I keep my phone safe and in a case.

Everything about my phone still works except the calls and voice memos. I can't use the headphones that came with the phone (the ones you plug in) BUT I can use my car speakers and I can use my bluetooth headset. So SCREW the repair and insurance. I am so DONE with the scamming tactics of Apple and each phone company. UGH!!

I was/am having this same exact problem. I purchased a new iphone7 replacement 15 days ago for $319.... my replacement, new iphone7 is now doing this as of three days ago and so once again, I’m unable to make or receive phone calls. Driving 2 hours to nearest Apple store tonight, hoping my replacement phone is under warranty. I can’t believe the replacement phone did the EXACT same thing within 14 days of owning it....,,

I have this same problem. It got worse after the Genius Bar reset it to back to factory specs. Even though it is a well documented issue across the internet as "loop disease". Apple will not do anything for you.

Makes you wonder why we buy a premium product and expect that it should last more then 22 months. Up until now Apple is not recognizing this as the design/manufacturing defect it really is. Only solution is to get a replacement for $350 or find a third party repair shop. If you are lucky enough to have one of these in your area I read they are charging about a $100.

Way to go Apple - stick your head in the sand and ignore your customers!

I did not expect this from a company known for its customer service. This is not just a manufacturer defect, this is a known defect caused by an update that they continue to send to customers without warning. If I had known I would have not updated my phone and it would be fine. Its in their capacity to send out a press release and even better a text to all users but they don't want the bad publicity. They would rather I give them the 300 dollars I was going to put into my kids college fund.

If Tim Cook ripped my phone out of my hand and threw it against the wall he'd be liable to replace. If apple sends me an update that they know could break my phone, they are liable to replace it.

I am sure there is an ambitious attorney out there that would like a good crack a class action lawsuit. This seems like a good candidate.

Only if the community members in this forum unite and take this issue collectively with Apple by social media, it might help as Apple will not listen to individual buyers, it's nothing for them, but if they see a group of people collectively approaching to them, they would think twice before turning them down.

Any Idea how can we raise our voice collectively on social media to make Apple listen to this issue and offer a free repair or a replacement for out of warranty devices?

It would be better to create a name specific to this issue and not a generic apple community.

How about name as "iPhone 7 Microphone Failures" (and in the description we can write that this group is created for all the users who have iPhone 7 or 7 Plus and who have been affected with the Microphone not working issue and would like to take this up with Apple for this hardware failure)

#iPhone7MicrophoneFailure - for twitter

what say?

This is good progress. I will definitely join such a group. This issue also needs to be brought to the attention of the press, like the battery thing was. That’s the main problem with this issue as I see it. In the latter case there was a lot of publicity around it. It was reported repeatedly in various publications and Apple was stung into addressing the issue. Other then Mac Rumours and a couple of threads on This site I have not seen this issue brought to the fore apart from an attempt to blame it on hardware issues. As somebody earlier said Apple has only had to deal with and pick off individuals one at a time. Thus they have been eschewing ethical and moral behaviour and probably skirting consumer law as well in half a dozen countries

Experiencing the exact same problem. After hours on hold with Apple support, told it was hardware - microphone - that needed replaced.

Very disappointed with the poor support for fix/replacement given how many other users are experiencing the same problem.

Apple... what happened to producing a quality product that you would stand behind?

After over 10 years of being a loyal Apple customer, I am EXTREMELY disappointed. Shame on you for producing a product with know defects and not providing a fix. Shame on you.

i’ve had the same problem, my i phone 7 plus just refuses to accept anything that uses microphone, i can’t even record voice memos, get audio through my videos, snapchat, calls don’t get heard and they can’t hear me, i use siri because the button doesn’t click since there is “no microphone available”. it’s gotten to the point where i have to use my airpods for everything and even then i don’t get any microphone access to my videos or snapchat, whenever i click the microphone on the keyboard it immediately stops recording. i’m hoping this is a software issue and gets resolved real soon

I just recently experience this with the 11.4.1 update. Looks like you posted in April. What was the outcome? Did you phone get fixed? It is August now and it looks like it is still happening. I tried to search the forums and all the links I click say Apple will be back and that they are updating their support communities. Hmmm. I wonder why? I am getting the run around.

Hi Diprita,

I am from Mumbai and I also had been through a similar experience, however i did not go so far. Even when I asked about an escalation mechanism, i got the same reply that person speaking on phone is the final authority.

In my experience in buying products in US, i believe that the apple customer support in US is more customer sensitive than in India. I am not sure if the customers in US are getting support for this issue outside the warranty period or is it the same treatment as to what we are getting in India.

It is true that many customers are facing this same problem, but as the customers are dispersed across the globe and not united, Apple finds it very easy to shoo them away as an individual customer. If a $1000 phone only works for 15-18 months, then this quality is not worth the premium price charged by Apple to its customers.

I am not sure, how all the customers who have reported this issue in this forum can unite and take this issue with apple as a group. Any ideas, please suggest?

Regards,

Manish

This problem was presented on my iphone 7 today, in exactly the same way as described, which makes me understand that the problem is much more common than I could imagine, I've been searching in other sources and I know that the number of requests of this theme has grown a lot, as well as tickets to their authorized devices, noting the same problem, I am directed to Apple to make the appropriate assessments. I hope that they will take responsibility, because my device is one of my sources of work, I use it a lot and in the moment I will be without it for a few days.

I started having this issue when I upgraded to 11.4 from 11.2 on my 7 Plus.

I really hope Apple owns up to this Audio IC issue. I shouldn’t have to shell out $350 for a phone I just paid $800 for just a year earlier.

I’m back to using my SE, but I can’t see myself buying another iPhone if Apple doesn’t want to fix their own mistakes.
