Microphone not working on iPhone 7

When making phone calls I cannot hear the other person, and they can't hear me. My voice memos app won't let me record anything in order to test the microphone and speakers. If i take a video, there is no sound. I can get sound on previous videos though. Siri can't hear me. I took my phone to the genius bar a couple days ago, and they did a factory reset. It didn't fix the issue. He said he ran diagnostics, and only told me that I should buy a new battery. I just did apple chat, and was told I need to take it in for a hardware issues. Any other ideas? Is this going to cost me a replacement?

Hello,

I had the same issue on my iPhone 7. I took my phone to the Apple store and said that I believed my iPhone microphone issue was part of a larger problem that Apple has now recognized. See link: https://www.macrumors.com/2018/05/04/apple-aware-of-iphone-7-mic-issue-ios-11-3/

The technician said they were aware of the issue and that my phone could be replaced out of warranty if a specific error code came up when running diagnostics. The error code has to either say "device could not detect dock" or "accessory not supported" in order for them to replace the phone. Fortunately, my phone had this error code and they replaced it with out question. My sister also had the same problem. She went to a different Apple store and the technician just confirmed that the speaker button was grayed out when making a phone call (described in article). Just this alone was enough for him to replace the phone out of warranty.

Every Apple store is different. I would suggest printing out the article and bring it just in case they attempt to blame you for the microphone no longer working. Just state that your phone has the same exact issues as described in the article and that you would like them to run a diagnostic. Good luck!

And where are posts from Aug 1st and 2nd? Like 2 pages dissapeared, I understand there was one troll, but still this is not nice to remove everything. But at least we know somebody is reading this... So dear Apple, I fixed this problem at the post-guarantee service and after 2 weeks it returned... at least I have now guarantee back for 3 months. Just going to service avery 2 weeks might be annoying....

Same here... updated to 11.4 and it broke my microphone. Save your time folks, Apple will not help you. I spent probably 4 hours on the phone and chat trying to get this resolved and they all referred back to the Apple store. I finally had the courage to visit a store and as expected they wanted to charge me for their mistake. It’s unreal how a company with so much money can treat its customers with such disrespect.

It's really sad that all these people have the same problem and there has been no solution. For a company where my family and I spend so much money on every year, with ipads, laptops, and phones (more than 8 devices in my home) it's sad that they can't own up to a hardware issue. How is it that a phone you pay over $700 for does not last two years? I spent all day today trying to "diagnose" this issue with both a Bar Genius and apple care support, and I am left with the choice to pay another $350 for a phone that might not last me another two years.

Was planning on upgrading, but if they act like this with a phone that is $700, should I expect an iphone X to last me also less than a year when you pay over $1000?

I was/am having this same exact problem. I purchased a new iphone7 replacement 15 days ago for $319.... my replacement, new iphone7 is now doing this as of three days ago and so once again, I’m unable to make or receive phone calls. Driving 2 hours to nearest Apple store tonight, hoping my replacement phone is under warranty. I can’t believe the replacement phone did the EXACT same thing within 14 days of owning it....,,

Only if the community members in this forum unite and take this issue collectively with Apple by social media, it might help as Apple will not listen to individual buyers, it's nothing for them, but if they see a group of people collectively approaching to them, they would think twice before turning them down.

Any Idea how can we raise our voice collectively on social media to make Apple listen to this issue and offer a free repair or a replacement for out of warranty devices?

It would be better to create a name specific to this issue and not a generic apple community.

How about name as "iPhone 7 Microphone Failures" (and in the description we can write that this group is created for all the users who have iPhone 7 or 7 Plus and who have been affected with the Microphone not working issue and would like to take this up with Apple for this hardware failure)

#iPhone7MicrophoneFailure - for twitter

what say?

Experiencing the exact same problem. After hours on hold with Apple support, told it was hardware - microphone - that needed replaced.

Very disappointed with the poor support for fix/replacement given how many other users are experiencing the same problem.

Apple... what happened to producing a quality product that you would stand behind?

After over 10 years of being a loyal Apple customer, I am EXTREMELY disappointed. Shame on you for producing a product with know defects and not providing a fix. Shame on you.

i’ve had the same problem, my i phone 7 plus just refuses to accept anything that uses microphone, i can’t even record voice memos, get audio through my videos, snapchat, calls don’t get heard and they can’t hear me, i use siri because the button doesn’t click since there is “no microphone available”. it’s gotten to the point where i have to use my airpods for everything and even then i don’t get any microphone access to my videos or snapchat, whenever i click the microphone on the keyboard it immediately stops recording. i’m hoping this is a software issue and gets resolved real soon

I just recently experience this with the 11.4.1 update. Looks like you posted in April. What was the outcome? Did you phone get fixed? It is August now and it looks like it is still happening. I tried to search the forums and all the links I click say Apple will be back and that they are updating their support communities. Hmmm. I wonder why? I am getting the run around.
