iTunes Freezes on iPod Classic connect.

Just started happening. With iTunes open, as soon as I connect iPod classic to sync, iTunes freezes. No response.

Re-installed latest update and iTunes still freezes. Any ideas?

Connected my other iPod classic and sync worked with same library.

For informational purpose: Syncing both iPods is often difficult. Usually have to plug and unplug a number of times before iTunes recognizes iPod is connected. Just all part of the fun.

iPod classic, Windows Vista

iTunes 12.7.4.76 should be capable of syncing to an iPod classic.

To roll back to iTunes 12.7.3.46 see the iTunes installers section of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for direct download links and advice on reverting to a pre-upgrade copy of your library. You lose the changes made to the library since you installed 12.7.4.76.

Stats look OK from here. Assuming the same lead is used for both devices try carefully cleaning out any fluff from the docking port and making and breaking the connection several times in succession in case there is something that isn't getting a good contact. Do you have any anti-virus software? Are there obvious differences between the configuration of the devices? E.g. one set up for disk mode and the other not.

Same lead, same config. I use Windows Defender as av. It's all music, one backing up the other. (I have other backups as well) Should I try disabling Defender?

The ports seem clean. A bit of dust on lower plate but connects clean and unobstructed.

As I mentioned above, when connecting to sync, I've nearly always have had to do the rapid plug/unplug routine in order to get iTunes to recognize the iPod. I do this on the iPod port, not the USB/computer port. Don't know if it makes a difference.

Hate the thought of a reformat/restore. Takes forever and securely connecting the 2 devices is mysteriously erratic.

Can't breathe around them when connected.

Hey, thanx for your reply. Much appreciated.

These are the results of the HDSMARTData test.

Retracts: 12

Reallocs: 0

Pending Sectors: 0

PowerOn Hours: 11758

Start/Stops: 23492

Temp: Current 28c

Temp: Min 0c

Temp: Max 50c

Also ran a Windows scan for error test which did not come up with anything. Tried the DFU restore. Left iPod connected and opened iTunes. Froze up immediately.

Looks like a reformat is on deck. I'm going hold off on that and to wait for any thoughts.

Well, I'll continue the rapid plug/unplug routine and I'll get a new USB cord. If all fails, I'll reformat. The cranky iPod is 4 years old. I use it a all the time. The other is new and seldom used.(for now)

I love the iPod. I like keeping my music separated and in one place. Terribly disappointed Apple pulled the plug on it....a sad day.

Thanx a ton for your advise and suggestions. I'll let you know

Honorable tt2,

It seems I need to revert to an older version of iTunes to solve my problem(hopefully) Someone posted having the same type issue and solved it by reverting. My question; how to determine which version?

This issue started after most recent update to 12.7.4.76. Do I simply go back to 12.7.3.46? Or further? I'm curious because the person who had the issue solved it by reverting way back to 12.1.3.6.

I trust in your advise.

Well, I reverted to v.12.7.3.46 and now neither ipod will sync. The nature of the problem has shifted. iTunes now does not freeze. It recognizes both ipods when connected. I can get to the summary window. They simply won't sync. The ipods are also quick to go into 'safe to remove' mode. And that's without any input from me other than hitting the sync button. They also flashes 'syncing' and 'connected' and switch between the 3 modes. Could it be the drivers? If so, how do I revert to correct drivers?
