iTunes stuck on "Reading photos from Pictures"

Running latest iTunes (12.7.4) on a Windows 10 PC.

Trying to sync iPhone X (on iOS 11.3).

For some reason it just started hanging during sync stage 4 *reading photos from pictures".

Library has ~ 16,000 pictures and videos.

Was working fine previously.

Anyone else have this issue, or a solution?

Much thanks!

I was one of the first posters on this thread, and I am very happy to report that, after updating my IOS (IPhone 8) to 11.4 today, and updating ITunes to version 12.7.5.9 (released today), syncing my 4800 photos locally (not ICloud) through ITunes took just over 5 SECONDS. I have synced three times, just to verify, and subsequent syncs were essentially instantaneous.

I made NO other changes to my Windows 10 system, except to install these two updates from Apple. I am going to pronounce the issue resolved, at least for me.

Looks like Apple was listening after all. I just wish the tech support people knew more about what was going on in development. My experience with Apple Customer support throughout this process was essentially useless, right up to them replacing my PHONE for what was ultimately what we all knew.....a software bug in either IOS or ITunes.

I totally agree with everything you have said. I have also realised that this syncing issue also affects us being able to load music onto our iPads and iPhones almost defeating the purpose of having an iPad or iPhone.

Please also post the Apple telephone number here so that those people who are too lazy to find it can contact Apple directly to add “logs to the fire”

Thank you very much. I Reported this problem over a month ago but I will do it again. And Simone posted they are having problems syncing their music, so am I on both iPhone and iPad. But once I turned on iCloud for photos and syncing it through iCloud, which is a total disaster, the music downloaded. I’m having so many problems transferring the photos from iCloud to iPhone. I have over 20,000 photos. I’ll settle for at least the last two years on my phone and I can’t even get that to be seamless. Thanks again.

Thank you, Michael. I'm catching up to all you wrote last night. I agree with everything you've said so far. Apple should fix this. They are going backwards. I've been trying to upload all my photos to iCloud. I've been doing that now for over a week and I haven't been able to successfully get all of them uploaded because it crashes on me and I have to start over. Plus the pictures aren't being put in date order, which is how I like it, or in the folders I created from my PC. I'll try your fix when I have about three hours to do it. It seems like none of this is easy. So frustrating. Thank you again. Have a great weekend.

Thank you to those people who have posted, ways to get around this issue to enable us to sync our iPad or iPhone to iTunes.

But I am not a highly tech person and I do not see why we should have to go through all these different procedures to get the iPad/ phone to work as it should do.

I have an appointment at the Genius Bar in Brent X Apple Store next Thursday and I will not be leaving till I can sync my iPad and iPhone to iTunes and load my photos in Albums.

I tried this combo. it didn’t work for me. After “removing” all the photos the folders are still there but empty. HEY APPLE. My wife wanted e to buy a new IPhone X and asked me to sync her 7 so I could use the backup to set up her new phone. Wellll that’s on hold. How many people could be in limbo on that $1000.00 purchase forthe same reason Apple. We hope we don’t have to wait until the IPHne XV comes out!!

I tried both methods. Keep the updated iTunes, erase the iPod photo cache, and following the instructions given by others. Also I downgrade the iTunes to the previous version, delete the iTunes library created by the new version, restore the library of the previous version, and so on. In both cases, the first sync came out fine (I only attempted a small numbers of folders). However, in subsequent syncs, iTunes failed to complete. The device is stuck at syncing and iTunes displayed “iPad cannot be synced. An internal device error occurred”. Anybody encountered this phenomenon? What could be done to fix it?

I totally agree with you. As I wrote before, I have the impression of being back at the time when we had to juggle with diskettes to copy files. This is 2018, and we all have an expensive device that we can’t use the way we were told we could. Apple, if you care to read what your customers think, I demand a refund! I bought my iPad mini because I need to display my 50 albums/22,000 pictures to clients. I was unable to do it for several weeks back at the end of the year/beginning of this year, and you constantly lied to me about the cause, and wasted A LOT of my time. This time around, it’s even longer, and no solution in sight. I have no use for my iPad now. I demand a refund.
