iMac is extremely slow

Late 2012 version of iMac running macOS High Sierra with the original 1 TB SATA Disk hard drive. The computer has become extremely slow booting up, opening applications, closing applications, etc. I only use the computer for word processing and web surfing and just ordered a new 500 GB SSD from OWS. Will this resolve the issue or should I consider adding more RAM too (currently has the original 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3)?

Uninstall the Kaspersky AV app, it's 100% worthless. Mac OS was designed from it's very beginning to be extremely secure and only needs to be kept up-to-date to remain so. It does not benefit at all from any antivirus, cleaning or any third party "maintenance" apps. Locate the Kaspersky uninstall instructions and then after it's uninstalled restart the computer in Safe Mode (to clear some caches) and then restart normally and retest.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support

Also, if you use Google Chrome this is a HUGE RAM resource hog. Consider changing to Safari which is a much more elegant product.
