Drains battery in sleep - High Sierra / MacBook Pro Early 2013

My setup:

MacBook Pro Early 2013

High Sierra 10.13.4

FileVault On

First of all, I used all recommendations I had found on Internet regarding the Battery drain issue during sleep, including:

- clean install of the latest Mac OS (10.13.4)

- reset NVRAM, SMC

- restore to defaults "Energy saver settings"

- turn off WiFi, bluetooth

- disconnect usb and all other cables

- use only Safari (no chrome)

- turn off various services (like dropbox)

- various settings via pmset

- etc.

No major changes. In fact, I even changed the battery in the official Apple service center! It shows "Normal" now.

I read all the posts on various forums. It is my last hope to find a solution before switching to "power off only" way to use with the Mac.

Other days I tried leaving 100% charge. It doesn't matter.

Any ideas how to track the issue or what else to do?

I finally solved the problem with my MacBook Pro. I have a USB wireless mouse. If I remove the USB transmitter the computer no longer heats up in sleep mode and the battery does not drain. If the USB transmitter is left plugged in, the battery drains from 100% to 62% in overnight sleep mode and the computer is warm. This has been an issue since the 10.13.4 update.

Hi,

I have this issue too since I installed the release 10.13.4

Deactivating the hardware acceleration in Chrome doesn't suck the battery anymore when the lid is closed and the battery is no more draining as fast as it was but still.

The battery doesn't last how it lasted BEFORE the update. I lost smething like 5-6 hours of autonomy since I made this upgrade.

There is definitively something weird somewhere that is sucking the battery.

I'm using a Macbook Air (1 year old)

My solution.

Step 1. Accept the pain. The battery drain WILL happen to you.

Step 2. Shut down the laptop if you want to make sure you will get your charge when you turn it on next time.

Basically, I shut down the laptop if I want to work at Starbucks and don't want to take a charger with me or don't want to start looking for a plug the minute I hit the place. Pretty often, when I feel lazy, or the trip is short, I do not do the shut down procedure. The battery drain will not happen every single time, but eventually it will. Accept the pain, and stop wasting time on finding a solution. There is none. Your time is more valuable.

I know this is going to make some of you mad but I have been following this thread from the beginning and have been reading the posts which suggests removing any usb connections. I have been so frustrated with this issue and I want to try anything to help. I removed the usb to my wireless mouse and the battery drain is no longer occurring as of late. I know I know, several of you have stated it is not related. But, the moment I removed the usb the battery drain stopped. I’m not saying it won’t be back but for now it’s not an issue.

So I tried what seems like everything and I'm still stumped.

I complained to I. T about the issue and they agreed. They gave me another brand new identical MacBook

I backed up my 2017tb onto an external HDD then restored it onto another exact 2017tb

model.

Interestingly No battery drain! The computer behaves normally. I followed up with the I.T manager and he said they are in the process of fighting with Apple for a a complete replacement laptop, since the laptop was basically new, however Apple is trying to do a logic board repair (as usual).

So I do recommend if you're laptop is still under warranty, take it back! Maybe apple will finally take notice if a bunch of $3k laptops are being returned for battery drain.

The same issue on my company issued MacBook Pro (early 2015). This is unacceptable Apple! I put mine in sleep mode with a fully charged battery and I have a 40% + drain overnight and the computer gets warm since the 10.13.4 update. Prior to this, I could leave it in sleep mode for the entire weekend with very little (around 5%) battery drain. The only way around it is to do a shut-down.

I've had battery drain since updating to 10.13.4, while MacBook Pro 13-inch late 2013 is sleeping and unplugged overnight. Always unplug at the end of the day and store in sleeve, and before 10.13.4 I always had 100% battery in the morning. Since 10.13.4 I do exactly the same, but this time I'm around 35 mins away from fully charged.

Tried various things from forums but none of them work. Just thought I'd add to the reports of this problem in the hope Apple is taking note. This has to be a software issue, since problem suddenly occurred after updating to 10.13.4.

For the record, I updated to MacOS 10.13.5 and I still have this battery drain issue which began since updating to MacOS 10.13.4: Battery is fully charged while plugged in. Then I close the lid and unplug, and store MacBook Pro 13inch Late 2013 in sleeve overnight. When I plug back in the next day I'm around 35 mins away from fully charged.

To reiterate the issue, I didn't have this battery drain problem while MacBook was asleep and not plugged in before MacOS 10.13.4. It started occurring as soon as I updated to 10.13.4, suggesting it's not my battery which suddenly started losing its staying power, it was something in the updated OS software. And I've still got the issue now, after updating to 10.13.5.

Would be great if Apple could sort this out so I could start the day with a full charge like I always used to!

Hi All,

After turn off of wifi and unplug all usb device, then the battery at 12:00pm is 50% then at 6:00pm is 49%, during this period the machine is on sleeping mode. And the temperature is normal, like before upgarde.

It seem is the wifi and continous supply power to usb device, make the battery drains out.

Hope APPLE notice this issue and fix this ASAP.

Thank you for sharing! One question. Do you use FileVault? I do use it. Maybe that is what common with those having problems with the battery. I also called Apple and they confirmed, that I had performed all basic steps myself already, and that they would have to pass the case to a higher level engineers. They told me to wait for them to contact me. No reply since I contacted them about 5 days ago.

I have the same issue with a Late 2013 MacBook Pro and a Late 2017 MacBook Air on Mac OS 10.14.4. Battery at 100% when close the laptop, then at 50% when open up 10 hours later. Apple Support said to disable Carbonite - that did not work. Then they had me re-install the OS and delete all stored usernames for websites - that did not work. Tried closing all applications, no apps running at all - still drained while sleeping.

Any other ideas?
