Drains battery in sleep - High Sierra / MacBook Pro Early 2013

My setup:

MacBook Pro Early 2013

High Sierra 10.13.4

FileVault On

First of all, I used all recommendations I had found on Internet regarding the Battery drain issue during sleep, including:

- clean install of the latest Mac OS (10.13.4)

- reset NVRAM, SMC

- restore to defaults "Energy saver settings"

- turn off WiFi, bluetooth

- disconnect usb and all other cables

- use only Safari (no chrome)

- turn off various services (like dropbox)

- various settings via pmset

- etc.

No major changes. In fact, I even changed the battery in the official Apple service center! It shows "Normal" now.

I read all the posts on various forums. It is my last hope to find a solution before switching to "power off only" way to use with the Mac.

Other days I tried leaving 100% charge. It doesn't matter.

Any ideas how to track the issue or what else to do?

I finally solved the problem with my MacBook Pro. I have a USB wireless mouse. If I remove the USB transmitter the computer no longer heats up in sleep mode and the battery does not drain. If the USB transmitter is left plugged in, the battery drains from 100% to 62% in overnight sleep mode and the computer is warm. This has been an issue since the 10.13.4 update.

When I was replacing battery and motherboard (video card died) in my MacBook Pro 2013 after 4.5 years, I asked the service specialist whether I should buy a new MacBook Pro (I had to pay a lot for replacement). She told me that they were having too many issues with new models. My own company have a couple of new MacBook Pros. one of them broke twice (dynamics and video card) in 1 year. The second issue right after the warranty ended. I love apple. We build apps for iOS/Mac. But you are right, they do not seem to care about the quality nowadays

Thanks for sharing, but as I mentioned in the original post I tried disconnecting everything. In fact, I do not have anything connected. I suppose, those who voted for the issue to be fixed tried that as well. It does not hurt, to share this solution, of course. But it is important not to deviate from the major issue, which is not related to 3rd party software nor hardware connected. I actually lost hope to have it fixed, so I use "shut down" nowadays.

Hi lovilovi10,

I tried my WiFi and bluetooth enabled and disabled. It doesn't make any difference.

Here is what I'd like to add. I noticed that somedays the battery drain does not happen. Still I cannot connect it with anything specific. Could be related to Safari's open websites or internal processes of Mac OS X itself. It would be great to test the solution on several occasions to make sure it is a solution, as opposed to mere coincidence.

Thanks for sharing!

Thx for sharing! I hope it helps some people around here. At the same time, I still find it unacceptable to set up a "proper" environment for Mac (like closing Safari and disabling WiFi and bluetooth) before closing the lid. It is quite a lot of effort here. Easier to shut it down completely. It should be as easy as closing the lid and putting it in a backpack without worrying it gets hot or the drains its battery. And no, it does not work for me.

I also have annoying issues with my brand new MB Pro Mid 2017 (2TB, 16GB RAM, >$ 4000). Battery drains completely during sleep. Mac Mail crashes all the time. Also, it is slow. Thinking of going back to my good old MB Pro Mid 2010 with Mavericks - never had any issues with that. Apple, I expect quality from you! I'm absolutely not satisfied.

Exactly! The thing that winds me up most with technology is when you supposedly update it and it introduces an issue you didn't have before. Especially something like this, where I always had full battery after unplugged sleep, ever since I got the MacBook in 2013. Now, immediately after 10.13.4 and subsequently 10.13.5, it's about half an hour drained each time, having been asleep and unplugged overnight like always. Why should I have to leave it out plugged in overnight now, or charge it to full in the morning before I take it out when I never had to before?

If Apple are all about customer experience, then this software issue should be fixed.
