downloading images in safari in original file format

Since I upgraded to High Sierra, whenever I go to download an images from the Safari browser, it wants save the file as a "webarchive" instead of saving the actual image itself in a jpg, png or other original format. Can anyone explain why this download function vanished? Can anyone suggest a Safari plugin for downloading images in any format?

Make certain that you have show status bar enabled in the Safari view menu.

Roll over the remote file link. If that filename does not end in a recognizable image extension in the status bar at the bottom of your browser — then you will get a .webarchive if you try to download the typical .html, .htm, .js, or some other content management extension designed to obscure the real download link to the image.

If the file does have a real image (or .pdf) extension, then right-click on the link, and choose Download linked file… or Download linked file as… .
