Why are my export mixes too quiet??

My GB mixes are too quiet against the other music files in iTunes. How do I increase the volume when sharing to iTunes? Mixed MP4 file info shows volume at -0.9dB.

iTunes and almost all online services (Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube, etc.) use a process called "Loudness Normalization".

What that does is change the actual playback level to achieve a uniform playback loudness across all the audio program. That has the effect that the playback level of a highly compressed track is lowered compared to a track with a high dynamic, with the effect that the highly compressed track sounds actually lower.

I posted an in-depth tutorial about "Loudness Normatization" on my website that explains all that

Unfortunately, the Explanation for Auto Normaliztion in the the Advanced Preferences in GarageBand is incorrect, or at least misleading. It ignores the fact that "Loudness" is different from "Level". The checkbox just increases the level of your mix to 0 dBFS, it DOES NOT change the loudness. The term "loudness" describes the perception how loud your mix is. For example, if you increase the Volume Slider on your Track, you only change its level but not its loudness. Only a compressor or a limiter lets you increase the loudness.

Hope that helps
