Mac Mini 4,1 server identifying hard disk

Hi I have a Macmini4,1, server. That is the one that came with two HD’ and no CD drive.

It hangs in my network mainly as a server and for backups and I would like to replace one of the HD with a bigger one.

3 questions.

  1. How do I know what HD is which? One HD has the OS on it and that one I would like to leave in place. The other HD has the backup stuff on it and that one I like to replace. So I need to know who is who.
  2. And next is what is the maximum size HD this particular MM can handle?
  3. Anybody know what type HD it has installed? I need that info for getting a new one.

Thanks folks, look forward to your wisdom.

In terms of a drive, for a 2010 Mini the physical size would

be anything that would fit in a laptop. I think 9.5 to 11 mm

height which is typical for a 2.5 inch drive.

As far as storage size, whatever comes in that form factor will

work.

However, that Mini has a SATA II interface and most drives now

are manufactured with a SATA III interface. The newer one is

supposed to be backward compatible but check with the

manufacturers to make sure.

As to which is which, I know on the 2011 Mini Server, the boot drive

is the one you see on when you unscrew the bottom cover. In the 2010, since

the added drive was replacing a CD/DVD drive, the same may be true,

but don't take my word for it.
