iPad, use Touch ID to wake?

Hi, I use my iPad Mini 4 (iOS11) as an eReader while commuting, so I set up Touch ID for ease of use. When I'm transferring from between trains, I turn off the display to save battery power, but then when it's time to turn the display back on, Touch ID isn't an option, I have to enter the passcode. I don't mind entering the passcode when I first start the iPad after a full shutdown, but is there any way I can set up my iPad to allow me to use Touch ID after just turning off the display for a while? Thank you!

How are you turning the screen off?

You should not have to enter the passcode if you just pressed the power / sleep button once.

What happens when you try to use Touch ID after turning off the screen?

Are you sure you are using the finger or one of the fingers you have registered for touch ID to unlock the iPad?

Was the iPad provided by your employer or school?

Do you have any other settings, such as an Exchange email profile or other admin profile that may be enforcing such a requirement?

You can read here about when entering a passcode is required and Touch ID may not work:

It sounds like you’re actually turning the iPad off each time, not just blanking the display? If you have screen lock set to activate immediately (that is, as soon as the screen blanks) then all you need do is quickly press the power button once to activate the screen lock and blank the display. Then just use touchID to awaken it again later.

But if you shut the device down, then yes, you must enter the passcode upon restart.

Yes, I'm just pressing the power button one short press, but when I try to use it again, the passcode screen is there with instructions to enter the passcode. If I try to use Touch ID, nothing happens.
No, the iPad wasn't provided by a school or employer. I purchased it new online. No other admin profiles or Exchange email.
Yes, I'm using the correct finger. I registered both thumbs.
I'll check the link you sent, but everyone here seems to agree that Touch ID should work after one short press on the power button, so perhaps I haven't enabled it properly somewhere. I'll look around a bit...
