maps not displaying -- macOS 10.13

Maps.app does not display a map or satellite view -- just a blank grid. Same thing happening in Photos app for Places.

Location services are enabled for Maps in SysPrefs>>Security and Privacy>>Privacy.

Time to put this to bed. I’ve traced the problem to the cache cleaner app “Disk Diag” and verified this by using three of my machines in both W-Fi and ethernet mode. Running the Disk Diag app -- which I normally do after startup and prior to shutdown -- seems to disrupt the proper functioning of the Maps app.

In other words, if after startup, I launch Disk Diag and clean caches and subsequently that session launch the Maps app, it displays gridlines only -- no map or satellite overlay or pin drops. If I choose not to deploy Disk Diag, then the Maps app displays properly for that session.

If I deploy Disk Diag at the end of the session or day, and then shutdown and subsequently restart either later that day or the next but do not run Disk Diag initially, the Maps app displays properly. So a shutdown or restart will reset the caches that apparently are needed to support the proper functionality of the Maps app. Again these results pertain no matter whether operating over Wi-Fi or via an ethernet connection.

I’m gonna post a blog on this one.

Greetings Daily_llama,

I understand you're only seeing a blank gird when viewing locations with both Maps and the Photos app. I will be happy to help provide guidance for this behavior.

Let's have you test the behavior using safe mode with your MacBook Pro. See how to test the issue in safe mode from the following guide:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

If the behavior persist with safe mode, let's have you test the issue with a different user account with your MacBook Pro. You can see how to test the issue with another user account from the following article:

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Let me know how the provided steps work out for you.

Kind regards.

Thanks for the response MoonJ.

I have had this problem with Maps before with this computer. I'll give you a link in a separate post here.

Long and short, it appears that Maps will not work in my location (home business) unless I have Wi-Fi enabled. When I attempt to launch Maps I get a dialogue box warning me to turn on Wi-Fi. I use a wired network here and each machine/device has a defined (static) Local IP both in SysPrefs>>Network and on our TimeCapsule Network>>DHCP and NAT settings. They match.

Maps apparently does not like this. Because of this Maps is completely useless for us and also doesn’t work either for Photos or iPhoto.
