Please keep in mind not a soul I know over 50 would ever post here or Tweet about this issue. And maybe two people I know under 50 would see "iPhone updated" in the morning and give a single hoot.
I suspect most of the regulars who've been responding in this thread are over 50.Based on things people have said in threads, many people who are not regulars are over 50.
Why would anybody else waste their time complaining about ostensibly a non-issue?
No one's saying it's a non-issue. People are saying it's probably not the issue many people think it is. When you come to a technical support forum with a preconceived idea about why you're having a problem, that can, sometimes, impede the troubleshooting process.

That is not the problem. The problem is that people's phones appear to have updated without their owners being aware of giving permission. Maybe they are updating completely independently. Maybe it's aliens. Or, maybe it's something a lot simpler.
I have an iPhone 6s Plus and it was updated to iOS 11.4.1 from a smooth running iOS 10.3 without my knowledgeable consent.
As I see it, this is not the phone I have purchased !!
iOS updates should not harp on you every second week asking to update/update later.
If I wanted to update then I and everyone else in that matter would just go to the settings and look for updates avail if they wish this. Not be attacked with unwanted updates prompting for answers.
Now my question is, how do I get my phone back to my original condition as purchased??
Very concerned consumer.

my situation is slightly different than most posters here. i typically keep my iphone se updated with the latest software. in fact, i randomly checked for a software update a few days ago and my phone showed i was on the latest software (don't recall if it specifically said 11.4.1 or not, sorry). sometime today between about 11:30am (last time i used my phone to send a text) and now (about 2pm) my phone "updated". since ios 11.4.1 was released in july and i checked within the last week for an update, i have no idea what my phone possibly could have updated to today. not to mention, i never delayed an update request notification or requested an update today. after reaching for my phone and seeing my software had been updated, i also got a message saying my apple id could not be verified because there was no access to the server. i selected to skip the verification and couldn't sign out of my apple id for the same reason, no access to the server. i cycled power on my phone and got the software updated successfully message again and was able to login to my apple id at that time. i noticed my battery was dropping quickly so i cycled power one more time, nothing out of the ordinary during that power cycle. my phone now seems to be functioning correctly, but i'll need to keep on eye on it for a while.
This is not what I had purchased !!!
An addition to my iOS 11.4 update from iOS 10.3.3 that occurred without my permission:
- my purchased networking tools app are not functioning as they did when purchased while running iOS 10.3.3. Again this is not the app I had purchased originally because Apple has now blocked its functions after iOS 11.
Note from app developer:
The Fing network scanner sadly cannot show MAC addresses on iOS 11. The reason for this is that Apple has blocked any app from accessing MAC addresses in the ARP table of the iPhone’s Operating System (iOS). Therefore, MAC addresses can no longer be captured during a network scan performed on an iPhone.
- I will say again!!! This iPhone is not the phone I had purchased. It has been modified by Apple without my consent !! And Apple will not allow older iOS platforms to be reinstalled.
Apple you must allow any iOS platforms to be re-installed back to our idevices !!!

Please know what you are talking about before you respond. The automatic updates is NOT for apps AT ALL. It is for iOS Updates. That's why it's list under "Software Update". The apps update is under Settings, Apple ID, iTunes & App Stores, Automatic Downloads Select Apps
The post in which I made that statement if from April, long before iOS 12 was released and the settings were changed. What I posted was correct at the time I posted it. And, it never hurts to be pleasant to people when you're correcting them (especially if that correction turns out to be wrong).
Mine updated too and I purposefully make sure not to allow it when it asks over and over. I wasn’t even connected to WiFi. I just moved and do not have WiFi set up. P
I ALWAYS say no to the update. I woke this morning, took it from the charger, and found it had updated overnight.
Is Apple going to pay me to get rid of this $800 piece of garbage?
Your fantasy world is funny. Becasue you are absolutely wrong. I’d check with whoever told you that lie.
No. What’s baffling is that you have dismissed facts in favor of fantasy.
I know it ***** to be wrong. But you are. It’s a simple FACT you are unwilling to accept. That’s fine. If you feel better believing the lie, believe it.
Yup. You’d think that would prevent an update too. But, nope.
Ok.
Smart thinking on the log question. If anyone is aware of whether it exists and how to access it, that’d be very helpful.
Troubleshoot this. People’s iPhones ARE in fact updateing without permission.
