MacBook Pro 2017 2.3 GHz vs 3.1 GHz

Hey guys,

I am senior multimedia student looking to buy a new MacBook Pro for work purposes and I will be using programs like Photoshop, After Effects, Final Cut Pro X, Dragonframe, Audition, Blender, and Unity. I've done most of the research for what I should buy, but I still want to ask which laptop is better?

  • 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 Dual-Core
  • 16GB of 2133 MHz RAM | 256GB PCIe SSD
  • 13.3" 2560 x 1600 Retina Display

OR

  • 3.1 GHz Intel Core i5 Dual-Core
  • 16GB of 2133 MHz RAM | 256GB SSD
  • 13.3" 2560 x 1600 Retina Display

The MacBook Pro I have now is a 2011 13" 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 4 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM 512 GB SATA Disk Drive. And I have used some of these programs, but of course they run slow sometimes (especially Unity). I have understood that my main concern should be RAM, but my only concern is the processor. I know that the 2.3 GHz has Turbo Boost to 3.6 GHz and the 3.1 GHz has Turbo Boost to 3.5 GHz. I just don't want my laptop to be overheating all the time but I also don't want my programs to run slow. The price difference is pretty significant since the 3.1 GHz comes with Touch Bar, but that is in my budget.

So yea, with all this info, which one is better?

Thank you in advance for your replies!

Hi,

I was in the exact position as you.

After extensive research, I decided to go for the 3.1 GHz Touch Bar Model.

I run, the full Adobe Suite on a daily basis. Not that I have ran it all at once, I can confirm that Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere, will function all at once, with working projects open on all. Heating isn't an issue, I've only every had the base panel become 'warm'.

The only issue I have with mine is the battery. At school, using it in every class I end up having to charge mid-day.

The Touch Bar is kind of a novelty, but there some quite a few commands that make things so much easier.

Hope this helps.

There is really not much improvement in CPU bench mark scores since MBP 2012 Ivy bridge dual core i5.

If you want best performance then get a Quad Core i7 CPU.

The base model 15-inch MBP is your best purchase value at $2000

Customize MacBook Pro - Apple

If you add 8gb of ram and an SSD to your old MBP you will not be far behind the performance of a 2017 MBP.

For about $300-400 you can give your old MBP a hardware 2018 refresh. With NEW SSD, ram, and battery.
