Share fail with iMovie 10.1.9 on High Sierra

Today an update to iMovie, version 10.1.9 was installed on my Mac Pro desktop which uses High Sierra 10.13.3. When I try to share a movie clip, I get "Share Fail" message - but no other useful information. Trying to export clips I had successfully exported last fall (with an earlier version of iMovie) I now get the same Share Fail message - when before it worked perfectly.

Tried to safe boot, as suggested in an earlier post for similar error, but this version of iMovie won't work in safe boot mode.

If the files are 4k 60p, that might cause problems, as iMovie only works with 4k 30p. You can try exporting at a lower resolution and see if that works.

Also, if the files came from iPhone 7 or later, they may be in HEVC format that sometimes causes problems. If that's the case, you can change your video export settings format on your iPhone to "most compatible".

Have you tried opening iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and selecting to delete preferences from the box that appears? If not, try it and see if that helps.

Another thing you can try is to open iMovie in a new library, copy one of your problematic projects into the new library, and see if you can share from there. You can open in a new library by holding down the Option key as you launch iMovie, and selecting New in the box that appears.

The latest version of High Sierra is 10.13.4, so you might try updating to that if you haven't already.

I may actually be able to help with this issue. I recently updated to High Sierra and iMovie 10.1.9., and had the same experience when I tried to upload to file (or share to file). What worked for me was to drag the clip I wanted to share from the upper left area of the window, down into the edit area or gray area in the lower half of the screen. Then, I selected the clip in the lower area and was able to successfully share it. However, I noticed right away that it takes 3-4 times longer to share the same size clip as it did in the previous version of iMovie. So much for new and improved.

Hi brothertrucker,

Yes, this does seem to work (dragging clip into the "editing pane" and then sharing from there) - but file sharing can be slow. If you share a file which has material clipped from the original file, then it is even slower - but I guess at least it works. I'm going to try some newer (1080 p) files on my laptop (where I don't have to drag to gray project area to share) and my desktop where I must drag to project area to share.
