not that I am feeling stupid enough already but this one bothers me already way to long. My question is: how can I change the color of a single bar in a numbers chart? Whenever I try to change a color it adjust the new color to all bars from the dataset. But I just want to highlight single bars like different colors for competitors and my data etc. Is that possible and if so: how?

It would be nice if you could change the color of each bar independently if you wanted to but it doesn't work that way in Numbers. One way to do it is to create a totally different chart, just like your original chart but with all the data set to 0 except the bars you want highlighted in each series. Remove things like legend, gridlines, etc., make the axis ranges identical for the two charts, make them the exact same size, then slide your "highlight" chart overtop of your other chart.
Here's a simple example of adding a data series, using the 'Charting Basics' template at File > New in your menu:
Add a series (extra column) to the data table.
Click the chart, then 'Edit Data References' and expand the data area to include the new column.
Change Chart Type to '2D Stacked Column'.
Choose 'Plot Columns as Series' at lower left:
You will now have one column with a different color. If you don't like the color that Numbers gives you then you can change it. First change the order of the series so you can select that one column.
Then click that one column and change the color in the Style tab.
The steps are similar for a horizontal bar chart.

A color applies to every member of that data series. If you need one bar in a different color you might experiment with adding a new series and applying a different color to that.

Ahh. I heard the problem as already being a multi-series bar chart, for which a stacked bar chart would not work.
