with Apple Watch 3, can I turn Wheelchair setting on and off during a day?

I am a part time Wheelchair user, and want to be able to use the wheelchair mode to track my activity on the days/parts of days that I am using my chair.

So in theory, I would like to think I could just go into the health app and turn the setting on and off mid-day as needed, but I am concerned that I will loose data by doing so. The setting says "When this setting is on, your iPhone stops tracking steps."

What does this exactly mean, what does it do with the data it has collected since the last time I changed the setting?

I want this to be a solution to help me combine my activity in my life as person learning to use a wheelchair and a person who painfully walks when she must.

Thank you in advance for any insights.

The watch uses the same sensors to track steps or wheelchair pushes, so depending on the wheelchair setting it interprets a similar signal as either a step or a push. I can see why it should dump previous data when the operating mode changes but I think the best approach is for you to risk a few hours of data and test for yourself. Start in one mode, note your achievement before you flip the switch, and check again after a test period in the second mode. Hopefully you will get results which give you the confidence to continue testing for the rest of the day.
