The use of higher output though otherwise similar power adapter would
be adequate because the device only takes what it needs from adapter.

One of my older second-hand PowerBook G4 12-inch 1.5GHz models
has one of these included with it from several years (decade?) ago and
it still works great. These do not have the pilot lamp in DC output plug;
so you cannot tell from that if it's powered. But it works, w/ 65w output.
Due to having other PPC G4 Mac portables, I also have several spare
power supplies, including early 45W for iBook (white) G3. On occasion
I've found good deals at charity thrift stores; & look ahead of any need.
Yes, if it is an Apple made power adapter, has the correct voltage and connector for your PowerBook. What you don't want to due is use a lower rated power supply.
