Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
Every time I try to update things like pages, keynote, etc. the app store pops up the little box that says "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled." How do I fix this? I bought my Mac second hand with these applications already installed, I don't have access to the original Apple ID that was used to install the applications.

In order to have and use those applications not in your Apple ID user account
purchases history, you would have to buy them. Then they would be available.
Correct set up prior to giving or selling the Mac (or another article on iOS device)
gives the general direction the original owner should have taken in this matter.

And a new prospective owner or recipient of the product as a gift should learn
of these factors because ownership comes from taking responsibility of them.
The iCloud pages and other Apple site contents also would apply.
I called Apple support and the solution was to delete Pages, Keynotes, and Numbers by dragging them to the trash, then go back to the Apple Store where NOW I have the option to get and install the app where before I only had the option to update. Apple really should improve the user interface and messages for this situation. Once I reinstalled the apps from the store the problem was resolved, but I didn't have to buy anything since the apps were free in my case, although I did not know this until I called Apple support.

Even those items listed as Free require you to download them from the App store
and various ones do say "Purchase" next to them. I've gotten several "free" that
had the word Purchase in the box by where I clicked to download. That's so true.
You can look to previously Purchased items in your Apple account to reload them.
{as my reply wasn't inaccurate ~ often the App store can limit users as I said}
And for those which may have been made unavailable after you removed them,
if not saved in iCloud backup, you might not get them again. ~ Details may vary
if you only just now learned a current rendition, not of how factual usage changed.
Because certain applications such as iWork subsections had been re-released as
free download under certain circumstances to specific macOS users, that is where
the details meet the road. So there's the road ~ as it exists in certain cases only.
