when editing a photo in the Photos app there is a little symbol/icon immediately to the left of Revert to Original. I can’t see what it does, hoped it would be split view, original and edited, but it doesn’t seem to do anything. Appreciate an explanation. Thanks

Then either both buttons are dead, or the photo has no adjustments.
I just noticed, that with Photos 3.0 on macOS 10.13.4 the the button "Show photo without adjustments" will work only for adjustments applied with the Adjustment panel, not for crop and straighten, at least in my library.
Test with a true adjustment. For example, turn Black & White" on. Can you now toggle the color off and on with the button "Show photo without adjustments" ?
It used to be this way in Photos 1.0 and 2.0. But this bar with thumbnails to the left is gone in Photos 3.0.
Now we only have the small strip with parts of the thumbnails below the edit window.
I used the "M" key too. But that is now also showing the cropped and straightened version, minus the adjustments. Very strange.
