iPod Classic wiped and ‘connect to power’ screen

Hi TT2,

I went to try the first step in your article - press and hold then swivel left to bring up diagnostics - but iPod screen said ‘Connect to power’. Put it on to my laptop and now it’s stuck on ‘charging please wait’. It is not showing up in Windows.

If this is a case of the hard drive having permanent damage, should I just save up for a new one? After all, I’ve had this since September 2007, so it has had a good innings.

Yesterday I had it charging on the laptop for four hours with the white screen ‘Do not disconnect’ screen, but was able to safely eject.

Twenty minutes later at BestBuy it had a two thirds green battery life synbol, menu items all there, songs etc...but one minute later, the ‘Connect to power’ screen returned.

Apple support booked me into the appt to see if it just needed a replacement battery, but the Indian guy just said, “Yours is 2nd generation and anyway we don’t do battery replacements.” I bought mine from Apple late 2007 - surely that’s 6th gen - space grey 120 gb.

Anyway, I’ll try again in another hour or so - still says ‘Charging please wait’.

If it is only the battery being completely dead, is replacement a viable option?

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Much appreciated. I’m sorry, I don’t know what is meant by HDD Stats.

At first, my computer opened the iPod folder, but when I connected it later, it didn’t. How can I find the HDD stats?

Thank you so much for responding in such helpful detail. I’ll try it shortly and let you know if it works out. I guess, though if the hard drive is damaged then my iPod is kaput.

I copied the ipod folders some months back. Is it possible to just drag those back onto the ipod instead of it being filled by iTunes?

Right, I see on eBay that a 6th fen 120 gb is $450 new in box (but how would I know if it were really new?) and I’m afraid to buy used because the battery would be too old.

I can’t perform the diagnostic because when I press and hold the ‘charging please wait screen’ just comes back again.

Thank you so much for your thorough and helpful advice. It looks like there’s only one place in NYC that might do a battery replacement, so I’ll try that but am resigned to buying an iPod touch 128 gb now.
