Apple TV 4 doesn't recognize my HDMI to VGA converter
I am reopening this post in case my experience may help others...
Original issue was as follows:
I purchased a Kanex ATV Pro to connect my new Apple TV 4 to an older VGA projector. The Kanex adaptor works just fine with an older 2nd Gen Apple TV. However the Apple TV 4 simply shuts down as soon as a connect the Kanex to its HDMI output. Even after changing resolutions settings and performing a software update on he Apple TV (with a borrowed HDMI-capable monitor), I still do not get any signal out of the Kanex.
My own experience:
Same issue: I had a regular HDMI to VGA converter (passive, no DC power needed) and worked perfectly fine for more than two years between my Apple TV Gen 2 and my old LG TV screen. I bought the VGA adapter because although my TV has 3 HDMI inputs, the TV is not HDCP compatible (i.e. not able to see Netflix movies). With the adapter the problem was solved. Lately I decided to replace my old Apple TV Gen 2 with a new Gen 4 32GB. Just replaced one with the other, same converter, and the nightmare started. The connection worked a few seconds and then failed with a blank screen. I tried everything, form changing resolution to full reset with no success.
Then I found a message in this forum from users Kiwian indicating Gen 4 Apple TV doesn't have any power out over HDMI. I visited several stores (Steren, RadioShack, BestBuy) until I found an Active (connected to power with a 5v DC adapter) HDMI to VGA. Cost was around $35 Dls, Voila! I can watch again all contents (Netflix, etc.) with no problem.
So if you are experiencing the same issue, there are two possible solutions:
1) Expensive one: Replace your old no HDCP compatible TV screen/monitor with a new/recent model
2) Cheap one: Buy yourself an Active HDMI to VGA converter and connect.
Hope this helps others!
