Crackle and Pop using CarPlay

I am having an issue with audio quality when using CarPlay. This issue affects playback using both iTunes and the Podcast app. Every 3 - 15 minutes the audio will skip for about half a second and very often, but not always, comes back highly distorted with crackling and popping. Very occasionally it will skip and not experience an audio drop.

The only work around I have found is to either turn off the car and restart it, or unplug the phone from the USB and re-plug it. This works until the next skip, which are occurring more frequently in recent days.

Switching to a different podcast or album results in a clean signal until another skip occurs. Switching from an affected podcast or album to a clean one, then back again, does not fix the issue. Once corrupted the audio remains corrupted until the phone is disconnected then reconnected.

I have tried the following with no success -

  • Rebooting the phone
  • Using a new lightning cable

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.3

I had this issue since 11.3.1 and I just updated to 11.4 with no fixes.

******* I remember making some setting changes to the audio when 11.3.1 was released and after reverting them back and it works the crackling/distorted sound it’s gone. Go to your SETTINGS I believe it’s on ACCESSABILITY and turn MONO audio OFF.

Hi there,

Many thanks for taking the time to share this information. I managed to perform the steps described in your post with success.

However, one piece of advice regarding Right-Handed and Left-Handed cars.

Even though the system on my Tucson 2018 is the model TLL3000B (Left-Handed Countries - Brazil) and not the TL-01, I took my chances and installed the TL-01 software. I was glad to see it worked and the cracking and popping no longer exists. The sound is clear and I can now use Apple CarPlay with Waze and listen to my favorite songs without going crazy.

However, please note that the TL-01 is for Right-Handed cars like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, UK etc...

Even though the software worked and the main problem is fixed, all buttons including the volume knob and radio station know are in inverted now.

I can live with that since it is not a biggie for me. I have sent an email to support@cartronics.net.au asking if they can help me providing a 2.05.10 SW version for the Left-Handed unit TLL3000B.

Perhaps someone here knows how to enter some sort of engineering mode in the unit so that I can look for a possible option to define if the unit is installed in a Left-Handed or Right-Handed car? ;-)

Once I get a reply from Cartronics Support, I shall let you all know.

I must say that even with this minor setback I think it was totally worth to take my chances and apply the 2.05.10 fix for the TL-01 onto my TLL3000B. I recommend even if there is no TLL3000B version available. All steering wheel controls work fine as well as the rear camera.

Kindest Regards,

I have the same problem as the rest of you.

Hyundai Tucson 2018 build date

Sound crackles/pops most noticeably from front left speaker

Cause appears to be "Cartronics" audio head units. Affected Head Unit Models TL-01, DM-01, GD-03, AD-01 and FS-02

Information sourced from public forum https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2720588&p=4

Users report that some model cars from same family do not have this problem. Tested by (For Example) trying Apple Car Play in Base model Santa Fe and Highlander Santa Fe. One is affected and the other not.

Head unit model numbers are visible on top of head units.

Again, information sourced from a public forum https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2720588&p=4

If anyone is looking at getting their head unit replaced or software upgraded, then see if your head unit is one of the reported that is affected.

I will look into this myself once the car reaches 1500km's and ask the service technicians if there is another compatible head unit that can replace the one I currently have.

Good Luck All

I have this issues as well in my 2018 VW Tiguan. I am also currently renting a 2018 Atlas while on business travel. The crackling starts on both vehicles every time the phone transitions to a new cell tower while driving. I can also duplicate it on demand when at home by transitioning from cell to wifi and vice versa. When I am driving I have just been unplugging the usb and plugging it back it to get rid of the crackling (Annoying!!!). Then once I transition again to a new cell the crackling starts again. I did the same testing with just my head phones plugged in and there is not an issue. Bluetooth also works, but then you don't get CarPlay.

I have been studying this issue for the past month as it frustrates me to no end.

My wife's iPhone 8 was not updated to 11.3 - She has no issues.

My iPhone 6s was updated to 11.3.1 (i'm a sucker for the red UPDATE ME badge on settings) and immediately I experienced the issues (crackling, affecting all phone, music, etc... all audio is affected).

We have two Carplay enabled Chevy (a silverado and suburban) radios. She has no issues, while I have issues within 10-15 minutes of Carplay use (on average).

I have replaced cables, unpaired bluetooth, deleted Carplay settings, etc... no real help. Also, several rental cars (Hyundai's and Dodge's mainly) have also had the same issue when using Carplay.

This is either a 11.3.1 problem or an iPhone 6s @ 11.3.1 problem. I have called Chevy Infotainment and lodged two tickets (allowed one per car) but they really didn't have any answers. I am trying to be patient while waiting for a fix but I don't even see it in the beta change log!

Someone at Apple - Please isolate and resolve this annoying problem! Carplay is a big part of my life.

This is an apple problem, I have a 2018 Honda and same thing happens before 11.3.1 everything played well. And it’s not just through CarPlay but through phone speakers but since your vehicle sends sound more clean through each speaker it’s more noticeable. Also my wife’s iPhone 8 doesn’t have this issue so it’s clearly a hardware issue to some iPhone users. I was using an iPod but after the new update I remember I had mono audio on in my settings and after 11.4 update I turned it off and the distorted sound it’s mostly gone I can hear it on some songs but for the most part it’s gone but not fully.

Apple just needs to get their stuff right, every update they have there’s always something wrong and it’s just getting old.

Hyundai i30 2016, Australian model. The snap crackle pop was driving me crazy! Tried 2 different iPhones 2 different Apple USB cables. More noticeable on quieter passages...Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” or similar really highlight it. Not as noticeable on rock, since the music probably drowns it out.

Tried changing the EQ settings: Normal helps minimise it a bit; Rock highlights it.

Took it in for service - dealer told me it’s with the system software. Once Hyundai updates it with a fix, they would advise me.

So looks like we’re stuck with it...for now...

Same car, almost same iPhone (I have 7 not 7plus), same issue with the Apple CarPlay when playing music!

I’m about ready to drive my car off a cliff it’s so infuriating.

I have also had mine back to the Hyundai dealership I got it from twice for firmware updates and nothing fixes it!

They too have now advised it’s an Apple software issue and to call the Hyundai Customer Care 1800 number and make a complaint do they can put the required pressure on Apple!

I called Apple too and just got the run around with them wanting me to wipe this and re-install that and I just refused as it was working fine til I update to 11. Anything software!
