Crackle and Pop using CarPlay

I am having an issue with audio quality when using CarPlay. This issue affects playback using both iTunes and the Podcast app. Every 3 - 15 minutes the audio will skip for about half a second and very often, but not always, comes back highly distorted with crackling and popping. Very occasionally it will skip and not experience an audio drop.

The only work around I have found is to either turn off the car and restart it, or unplug the phone from the USB and re-plug it. This works until the next skip, which are occurring more frequently in recent days.

Switching to a different podcast or album results in a clean signal until another skip occurs. Switching from an affected podcast or album to a clean one, then back again, does not fix the issue. Once corrupted the audio remains corrupted until the phone is disconnected then reconnected.

I have tried the following with no success -

  • Rebooting the phone
  • Using a new lightning cable

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.3

SOLVED!!!

Hello everyone. First of all I wanna say I’m sorry about any English mistakes. I am Brazilian so not a native speaker.

I was having the same crackling and popping problem with an iPhone X in a Mercedes Benz A200. My first guess it was a hardware issue, so I got to an authorized apple dealer and asked for warranty. They exchanged instantly for a new iPhone. The phone was working fine when I have installed as a new iPhone, but when I reseted and installed from a iCloud backup the crackling came back, what made me suspicious the problem was a software and not hardware problem. I got in touch with apple support by phone and dozens of tests were made. We got to the conclusion that the issue was some corrupted file in my backup, so I have backed up my photos, contacts and notes in iCloud once again, reseted the iPhone and installed as a new iPhone logged to my iCloud account. This way, I lost every files and settings I had but manteined the photos, notes and contact (they automatically download once you log in iCloud). I did this 3 days ago and didn’t have the problem one single time yet!!! Hope work for you guys too!!

Regards fom Brazil,

Raphael Freitas

Yes I spoke with an Apple support officer on Friday who wanted me to go through the motions of wiping my phone and starting from scratch and sending logs and I refused. Said I wasn't tech savvy enough and was worried I'd lose all my data (I don't even know how to use itunes). I asked him to keep me informed as to when they'd found a fix for this issue as it's driving me crazy.

I wouldn’t worry. I’ve submitted logs as I was beta testing iOS 12 anyway, so I wiped my phone when iOS 12 GM was released. I dare say a few of us have submitted more logs, what’s one more?

The only thing keeping me with Apple is my Apple Watch. I use it all the time. Android wear is terrible. I also prefer CarPlay when it’s working (especially now it has Waze).

I am most disappointed, given the amount of whinging I've done to my dealer, that I haven't heard anything yet. I will call them tomorrow and book pre-emptively book my car in. I hope this rectifies the other issue that only just arose for me since having my car serviced 2 weeks ago too - and that is any time I get a text whilst driving or if I use any other app whilst carplay is plugged in (maps for example), my AM radio goes completely fuzzy. So I have that issue and the crackling issue to fix.

Subject: New Tucson with Cartronics - TLL3000B - Brazilian

Firmware/Software

Hello there,

I have recently acquired a New Tucson Model 2018 which is sold in Brazil with a Cartronics Unit with SW TLL3000B. I believe the “B” at the end stands for “Brazil” and it incorporates Brazilian Portuguese to the system.

I noticed that when using CarPlay, the sound crackling and pops. So I contacted the dealer but it was unaware of any firmware or software upgrades.

So I used the Internet to my advantage and found a long article where people reported such issues and I ended up getting a link to an upgrade manual in RTF plus the .hdf file named tll3000h.hdf.

The following is the forum I used to get started:

The following are the links to the RTF instructions, PDF Manual and Software:

With no solutions made available from the dealership I took my chances and applied the update intended to the TL-01 into my TLL3000B model.

To cut things short, The update worked fine. The sound is clear while using Apple CarPlay. However, It seems the software update understood my unit as being a TL-01 one and even though it worked great, the button disposition is different.

For instance, the Setup Function is invoked from the Radio Button and the Radio Function is now invoked from the Setup Button, The volume wheel knob now changes radio stations and the Radio Station knob changes the volume. I found

out that there is a difference between the button disposition between the TL-01 and the TLL3000B model.

Is there a way you guys can release version 2.5.10 for the TLL3000B Model which is the one

I have in my New Tucson Model 2018 sold in Brazil?

Meanwhile, I can live with the button disposition being messed up now as I give more

importance to the popping and crackling being gone.

I have attached an image containing the Device Info prior to me applying the TL-01

software upgrade.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

 Kindest Regards,

Same with iOS 12 and my two vehicles. It’s absolutely ridiculous at this point. Does everyone at Apple drive the same one and only car that works properly? Pre 11.3 worked just fine.
