Crackle and Pop using CarPlay

I am having an issue with audio quality when using CarPlay. This issue affects playback using both iTunes and the Podcast app. Every 3 - 15 minutes the audio will skip for about half a second and very often, but not always, comes back highly distorted with crackling and popping. Very occasionally it will skip and not experience an audio drop.

The only work around I have found is to either turn off the car and restart it, or unplug the phone from the USB and re-plug it. This works until the next skip, which are occurring more frequently in recent days.

Switching to a different podcast or album results in a clean signal until another skip occurs. Switching from an affected podcast or album to a clean one, then back again, does not fix the issue. Once corrupted the audio remains corrupted until the phone is disconnected then reconnected.

I have tried the following with no success -

  • Rebooting the phone
  • Using a new lightning cable

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.3

SOLVED!!!

Hello everyone. First of all I wanna say I’m sorry about any English mistakes. I am Brazilian so not a native speaker.

I was having the same crackling and popping problem with an iPhone X in a Mercedes Benz A200. My first guess it was a hardware issue, so I got to an authorized apple dealer and asked for warranty. They exchanged instantly for a new iPhone. The phone was working fine when I have installed as a new iPhone, but when I reseted and installed from a iCloud backup the crackling came back, what made me suspicious the problem was a software and not hardware problem. I got in touch with apple support by phone and dozens of tests were made. We got to the conclusion that the issue was some corrupted file in my backup, so I have backed up my photos, contacts and notes in iCloud once again, reseted the iPhone and installed as a new iPhone logged to my iCloud account. This way, I lost every files and settings I had but manteined the photos, notes and contact (they automatically download once you log in iCloud). I did this 3 days ago and didn’t have the problem one single time yet!!! Hope work for you guys too!!

Regards fom Brazil,

Raphael Freitas

Apple is always in denial about problems with their products. One rep says it’s being worked on. The next rep says they aren’t aware of any issues. It’s crap. They only address a problem when it gets mass media attention. 11.3 is when this issue was introduced. It’s not an auto OEM issue as the latest rep told me. It’s an Apple iOS issue. All they need to do is rent any number of the vehicles listed and they will experience the problem in 10 minutes.

We have Animoji’s but I can’t do a mass delete of text messages on my watch. Apple has lost the magic that Jobs brought.

I’ve check a couple of songs that I know had this issue but for the most part I can still hear that distorted sound. I want to do a factory reset but I’m not sure if it will fix it and not to mention the hassle. I might contact Apple and see what they have to say since it appeared they fix an audio issue to other users that had a skipping problem on 11.4 update but we still have this problem. You think for Apple being on the digital audio for almost 20 years would have this problem resolved by now.

I have an Apple Watch... A couple of years ago I had a very stubburn Carplay problem in that the connection between my Iphone & Carplay was unstable, i.e. it kept losing connection. Went to the car dealer but they could not figger it out either. Updated to a new IOS, later to a new iPhone, nothing helped. What eventually did help for me at that time was to reset my IPhone & to not recover from backup (= new phone setup). Has anyone tried this yet? - I haven’t had time yet to do this. I think it was an app that was causing the problems. Unfortunately never could pinpoint which one (my suspicion was one of the apps recognizing what was playing)...

I don’t know what happen to mines but all I did was play my music on second music app I have and everything played well after on both second and Apple Music app. The second app I had had a worst distorted sound when I had this issue, have any of you tried doing a hard reset on your iPhones, I actually did prior to noticing the issue gone. So to me it seems iOS 11.4 fix the issue but it took a while for it and don’t know why.

As a workaround, try disabling CarPlay by going to Settings, General, Restrictions (set PIN), then disable the CarPlay option. This allows you to use your iPhone in iPod mode, still allowing you to browse your music library. Unfortunately you need to use Bluetooth for Siri and phone calls but it is a temp workaround for now. If you haven’t yet, get down to your dealer to update your CarPlay stereo software

In reply to "If you haven’t yet, get down to your dealer to update your CarPlay stereo software" there is no available update from Hyundai (Cartronics) that fixes this bug. I definitely encourage people to:

  • Call Apple Care Support
  • They will ask you to go through trouble shooting steps. The steps won't work. Give them the thread ID of this thread "8370078" and attach it to your case.
  • The more people contacting Apple about this, the quicker it will be fixed.
  • Contact Hyundai Customer Relations, let them know that you have a problem with your vehicle the servicing department can't fix.

The more people doing this, the better. The squeaky wheel gets the grease!

Cheers,

5. Some users have allegedly reported that a future iOS version fixes this problem and some of us wanted to verify if this is the case. The only way for them to report on success or not is to download, install and then report back to the discussion group if the software update resolves the issue.

6. . If the users are allegedly being banned from this group for reporting back their findings, then how are we suppose to know if the issue has been resolved?

That's easy: You will know/find out after the new iOS is publicly released and everyone can share their experiences. That is how Apple wants it.

Now a car is probably the 2nd biggest expense you will make apart from owning your own home. I would think more importance would be assigned to this problem to help resolve this issue that is happening to Apple phone users.

These are user to user forums, so neither Apple support personnel nor Apple Engineers generally read the thousands of daily posts here - discussing it here just results in "me too" responses which will not be very helpful.

Instead, anyone in a beta program should use the built in feedback assistant app and everyone else should use the feedback mechanism and/or contact Apple support about the issues they are having.

Aug 15, 2018 8:56 AM in response to bjorn.b

I will see if I can add a bit of an explanation from another user's viewpoint as to why things are being deleted. Apple may call the current beta release "public" because it is available to the public - anyone can sign up, so it is public. Discussing it anywhere though is NOT. Please read these two documents:

https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/faq

https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/legal

So, Apple considers it confidential; if you are running the beta, then you cannot discuss it or any of its added or missing features anywhere. Anyone running the beta agreed to that when they signed up. That includes discussing or linking to sites where they are violating their non-disclosure agreement terms by discussing anything about it.

And, as for these forums: the only Apple employees are the hosts who keep these sites running and monitor them. They do what they need to do: delete any mention of a beta so they are not in violation of Apple's rules.

So, if you want to call Apple's attention to a problem, discussing it here on user to user forums is pointless. Apple's development or engineering teams do not regularly monitor these discussions. If you want their attention, address it directly with Apple. Have you addressed it with Apple support?

An official response from any party would be helpful. At present we are hearing a whole lot of indecisiveness from all parties involved. Not even Apple has released a support article on this and it's been over 6 months. Is this something that can't be fixed?

I think Babowa answered this for us.

Apple will not respond here to any problems. Contact Apple support directly and tell them of the issue.

Be prepared to jump through some hoops as they will ask you, Have you done this, and, Have you tried this?

You may be asked to talk to an Engineer directly. They may ask you for video proof of the problem, and not just on YouTube. Be prepared to do some testing yourself.

If you complain here it falls on deaf ears. The only people listening are people with similar or same issues looking for help from users, and not Apple.

I do not know the country you are in bjorn.b, but contact Apple directly on Twitter @AppleSupport or ring their toll free number. I contacted them on Twitter. Hopefully you can start some fault finding with them. The more people actually contacting the right people, the sooner we may get a result.
