Crackle and Pop using CarPlay

I am having an issue with audio quality when using CarPlay. This issue affects playback using both iTunes and the Podcast app. Every 3 - 15 minutes the audio will skip for about half a second and very often, but not always, comes back highly distorted with crackling and popping. Very occasionally it will skip and not experience an audio drop.

The only work around I have found is to either turn off the car and restart it, or unplug the phone from the USB and re-plug it. This works until the next skip, which are occurring more frequently in recent days.

Switching to a different podcast or album results in a clean signal until another skip occurs. Switching from an affected podcast or album to a clean one, then back again, does not fix the issue. Once corrupted the audio remains corrupted until the phone is disconnected then reconnected.

I have tried the following with no success -

  • Rebooting the phone
  • Using a new lightning cable

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.3

As a workaround, try disabling CarPlay by going to Settings, General, Restrictions (set PIN), then disable the CarPlay option. This allows you to use your iPhone in iPod mode, still allowing you to browse your music library. Unfortunately you need to use Bluetooth for Siri and phone calls but it is a temp workaround for now. If you haven’t yet, get down to your dealer to update your CarPlay stereo software

Unfortunately, this won't solve the issue. Many head units with up to date firmware still experience the problems. This isn't a work around its defeating the entire idea of CarPlay. Users can save quite a bit of money simply plugging in their iPhones to Aux ports or Bluetooth enable devices if music is all that there interested in. It's not just music where the experience is poor. The pops occur when you summon Siri, the volume on the keypad is incredibly loud, stored extensions that work on the iPhone aren't recognized when using CarPlay. iTunes has a feature to level out volume between tracks, this should also work on CarPlay too. It's a much better experience with Android devices on the same units I own however give it time and focus by Apple, it could eventually be as good or better.

Got a reply from Hyundai Customer Care. No ETA but sounds promising at least.

Thank you for contacting Hyundai Customer Care and providing us an opportunity to respond.

This is an issue Hyundai Motor Company Australia is aware of, and are working with our manufacturer's and Apple for a remedy ASAP.

HMCA wishes to stop any finger pointing, we're accepting there is an issue and are working to have this fixed as it's a major inconvenience for all concerned.

Your vehicle and customer details have been documented and I will be in touch as soon as we have a resolution to this concern.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to respond to this email.

Kind regards,
Anton

Hey Kaspa07, def not your car. I have same prob and have tried in multiple brand new cars from different manufacturers (Hyundai Elanatra 2018, Honda Civic 2018, Mitsubishi ASX 2018, all have same problem!) and tried multiple lightning leads too.

Have contacted Apple, but they are totally unhelpful. wouldn’t be surprised if its another built in ‘get customers to upgrade their phone’ strategy from the evil empire that Apple are.

(BTW I only use an apple because my work supply me one. NOT a fan of their morals or ethics as a company at all!)

I’m having the same issue as the rest of you. In fact, it’s MUCH worse (more often) since the last update.

I’ve had the problem on two different vehicles of the same make/model (two 2018 Mercedes CLA’s) as well as a third vehicle (Nissan Maxima.... I think it’s a 2018).

I do have an Apple Watch.

Haven’t contacted Apple support yet but I will.

Another "Me Too" post. 11.4.1 on an iPhone 7 Plus with CarPlay in a Honda 2018 Ridgeline. I too have noticed a BT effect, where the drop followed by crackle & pop with degraded music play, but was then interrupted with a BT-connected phone call, and then after the call when the music came back up, it was clean & clear again.

A big thanks to Apple for giving us a digital throwback to needles that snag debris on vinyl record turntables and snarled tape on spindles and tires in cassette decks.

My lament: I've always hoped that Apple might have higher standards for professional talent and OS / app software engineering, but they've obviously become as sloppy and inept as every other software tech team on the planet. Whenever I'm warned about needing an iPhone / iTunes update, I've come to expect they've just come to do more damage and break more than they fix. Apparently competence and quality are irrelevant to collecting a paycheck for software work these days....

As an update to my similar issue, I ended up doing a system restore on my iPhone 7 about two weeks ago and that has solved my issue with the CarPlay popping/crackling sounds. I haven’t had any issues since.

This is the first thing most of the people here tried. It hasn't worked for me and nearly everyone else here including the OP.

I have the same problem as the rest of you.

Hyundai Tucson 2018 build date

Sound crackles/pops most noticeably from front left speaker

Cause appears to be "Cartronics" audio head units. Affected Head Unit Models TL-01, DM-01, GD-03, AD-01 and FS-02

Information sourced from public forum https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2720588&p=4

Users report that some model cars from same family do not have this problem. Tested by (For Example) trying Apple Car Play in Base model Santa Fe and Highlander Santa Fe. One is affected and the other not.

Head unit model numbers are visible on top of head units.

Again, information sourced from a public forum https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2720588&p=4

If anyone is looking at getting their head unit replaced or software upgraded, then see if your head unit is one of the reported that is affected.

I will look into this myself once the car reaches 1500km's and ask the service technicians if there is another compatible head unit that can replace the one I currently have.

Good Luck All

Jul 30, 2018 5:07 PM in response to Jamestwoduffs

Correct. If your car is fitted with one of the above models mentioned then you are most likely in the same boat as the rest of us. Your car could be a Hyundai, Honda, Ford, Toyota etc.

My car is due for a service in 1000km and I have informed them of the information I have gathered, and right now they are saying to me it could be a number of things, but a lot of you have already tried most of the things suggested such as new speakers, new charge cable, firmware upgrade and new head unit (guessing it's replaced with same model)
