Crackle and Pop using CarPlay

I am having an issue with audio quality when using CarPlay. This issue affects playback using both iTunes and the Podcast app. Every 3 - 15 minutes the audio will skip for about half a second and very often, but not always, comes back highly distorted with crackling and popping. Very occasionally it will skip and not experience an audio drop.

The only work around I have found is to either turn off the car and restart it, or unplug the phone from the USB and re-plug it. This works until the next skip, which are occurring more frequently in recent days.

Switching to a different podcast or album results in a clean signal until another skip occurs. Switching from an affected podcast or album to a clean one, then back again, does not fix the issue. Once corrupted the audio remains corrupted until the phone is disconnected then reconnected.

I have tried the following with no success -

  • Rebooting the phone
  • Using a new lightning cable

iPhone 6s, iOS 11.3

SOLVED!!!

Hello everyone. First of all I wanna say I’m sorry about any English mistakes. I am Brazilian so not a native speaker.

I was having the same crackling and popping problem with an iPhone X in a Mercedes Benz A200. My first guess it was a hardware issue, so I got to an authorized apple dealer and asked for warranty. They exchanged instantly for a new iPhone. The phone was working fine when I have installed as a new iPhone, but when I reseted and installed from a iCloud backup the crackling came back, what made me suspicious the problem was a software and not hardware problem. I got in touch with apple support by phone and dozens of tests were made. We got to the conclusion that the issue was some corrupted file in my backup, so I have backed up my photos, contacts and notes in iCloud once again, reseted the iPhone and installed as a new iPhone logged to my iCloud account. This way, I lost every files and settings I had but manteined the photos, notes and contact (they automatically download once you log in iCloud). I did this 3 days ago and didn’t have the problem one single time yet!!! Hope work for you guys too!!

Regards fom Brazil,

Raphael Freitas

I wear an Apple Watch but CarPlay still has the issue when I don’t wear my Apple Watch for the day.

Interesting updates re the VW golfs etc but I believe Hyundai’s are consistently doing this regardless of having vehicle switched off for a while or unplugging/replugging.

I would encourage anyone with a different make vehicle to get their own cases going; not sure if Apple are looking at other manufacturers at this point or not?

This comment serves no purpose here. The use of CarPlay involves Siri whether we think Siri is up to it or not. Audio upgrades are expensive and we at a minimum expect great sound and consistent behavior from our systems. This loud pop every time Siri is invoked damages speakers and at minimum disrupts the experience. This forum is for users to share their experience with CarPlay to see if its isolated to hardware, install, or software. There’s enough of us having the same issue to know it’s not isolated. Maybe an edge case but through conversations like this we will help to isolate and hopefully reproduce the issue in order to report a bug.

Yes Apple does occasionally check out the discussions here particularly if the discussion helps identify where and when an issue comes up.

I’d like to know more from users experience with CarPlay. Has anyone noticed that if you use the phone app keypad to RT in an extension how loud this is? Love to know if 11.2 is ok or just 11.3?

How frustrating. I just updated my iPhone 7 from iOS 1.2.x to 1.4 and now when using Carplay in my Kia the podcast app starts playing normally and then almost immediately begins crackling like crazy over the top of the audio. It's incredibly annoying and I wish I had never updated the phone. It was working perfectly before this. Ugh! Get your crap together Apple!

I'm having the same issue in my new Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, iPhone 6S with iOS 11.4. I've not noticed the crackling interference with the Radio, Bluetooth or my iPod, only with the Phone through Carplay. Not noticed it much with iTunes music from my phone but with a Audiobook download through the iBook App is terrible, cannot listen. I wondered at first if the interference was from the Cars electric system, but now see others are experiencing the same issue.

Over to you Apple, please look at a fix😕

Unfortunately, this won't solve the issue. Many head units with up to date firmware still experience the problems. This isn't a work around its defeating the entire idea of CarPlay. Users can save quite a bit of money simply plugging in their iPhones to Aux ports or Bluetooth enable devices if music is all that there interested in. It's not just music where the experience is poor. The pops occur when you summon Siri, the volume on the keypad is incredibly loud, stored extensions that work on the iPhone aren't recognized when using CarPlay. iTunes has a feature to level out volume between tracks, this should also work on CarPlay too. It's a much better experience with Android devices on the same units I own however give it time and focus by Apple, it could eventually be as good or better.

Got a reply from Hyundai Customer Care. No ETA but sounds promising at least.

Thank you for contacting Hyundai Customer Care and providing us an opportunity to respond.

This is an issue Hyundai Motor Company Australia is aware of, and are working with our manufacturer's and Apple for a remedy ASAP.

HMCA wishes to stop any finger pointing, we're accepting there is an issue and are working to have this fixed as it's a major inconvenience for all concerned.

Your vehicle and customer details have been documented and I will be in touch as soon as we have a resolution to this concern.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to respond to this email.

I’m having the same issue as the rest of you. In fact, it’s MUCH worse (more often) since the last update.

I’ve had the problem on two different vehicles of the same make/model (two 2018 Mercedes CLA’s) as well as a third vehicle (Nissan Maxima.... I think it’s a 2018).

I do have an Apple Watch.

Haven’t contacted Apple support yet but I will.

Another "Me Too" post. 11.4.1 on an iPhone 7 Plus with CarPlay in a Honda 2018 Ridgeline. I too have noticed a BT effect, where the drop followed by crackle & pop with degraded music play, but was then interrupted with a BT-connected phone call, and then after the call when the music came back up, it was clean & clear again.

A big thanks to Apple for giving us a digital throwback to needles that snag debris on vinyl record turntables and snarled tape on spindles and tires in cassette decks.

My lament: I've always hoped that Apple might have higher standards for professional talent and OS / app software engineering, but they've obviously become as sloppy and inept as every other software tech team on the planet. Whenever I'm warned about needing an iPhone / iTunes update, I've come to expect they've just come to do more damage and break more than they fix. Apparently competence and quality are irrelevant to collecting a paycheck for software work these days....

Did Apple seriously just censor a bunch of posts then regarding if the iOS 12 beta fixes this issue? If so I would find that very disappointing and actually indirect violation of their own Apple Beta Software Program Agreement which states publicly available information is not considered confidential!
