iPhone SE iOS 11.3.1 USB to Pioneer AVH-280BT Error-02-60 iPod Firmware version is old

iPhone SE

iOS 11.3.1

Pioneer AVH-280BT car head unit

Head Unit is a Pioneer AVH-280BT when connecting via USB, iPhone charges, however, not connecting: getting Error-02-60 “iPod Firmware version is old”, of all things. Yes, I tried several power cycles with the iPhone, turn head unit off then on again, starting music in the phone with the music app before connecting, nothing makes any difference.

I can connect via bluetooth, and play music, however, functions/features are missing or not available that are with USB connection.

A few months ago I had ZERO issues with connecting previous iPhones to this unit, using iOS 11, (I think up to 11.2.1?), also currently connecting iPad Mini (1st gen.) w/iOS 9.3.5. works fine. ...Is there something about 11.3 or 11.3.1 that is causing issues for anyone else?

I’m beginning to regret not spending a little more on a Pioneer unit that has upgradeable firmware, (this one does not). Apple really needs to not mess with iOS USB music connectivity.

iOS 11.4 FIXED THIS! 😀😀

I did contact Apple support, in as far as reporting a bug, but, I didn't call them. Once I calmed down about it, my instincts were telling me maybe it's a bug and to wait since the 11.4 betas were moving along quickly.

So, since this was fixed by an iOS update, it was not Pioneer's problem after all.

...In fact, I think USB connectivity is faster than it was previously, seems to start to play music faster than bluetooth.

😀

The release notes show 11.4 update may fix various connectivity issues:

"• Fixes an issue where CarPlay audio could become distorted
• Fixes an issue where selecting music from your iPhone could fail when playing music over Bluetooth or when connected to USB on some vehicles"

I am aware of how any and all companies write these kind of legal terms to protect themselves.

>Again, with macOS, I can easily go back to the previous macOS.

with iOS Apple disables the ability to go back.

I don't care what legal terms they use to protect themselves, that doesn't make it good for the customer. If they care about customer service, they will learn to warn people of major changes made to the OS that might affect it's usability.

This is unacceptable customer service. This isn't about what is legal for them to do, it's about people, their customers.

> What kind of change would they make in the middle of an iOS cycle that would completely disable USB connectivity? We are their paying customers and we need to know more about what they are doing. There are laws about transparency as well, that protect consumers, if you want to make it about legalities.

macOS and iOS despite their similarities have a major difference, iOS does NOT have a user accessible file management system. This limits a number of things that a user can do and is not going to be changed by Apple due to security and application reasons.

You keep assuming facts not in evidence. Can you show me that Apple made a change in USB connectivity that disables it? USB is a standard that Apple does not control, if they had made a proprietary change to it then EVERYONE would be having a problem with it, not just people with Pioneer (unlike Stuart I can remember the brand) would be having the same connectivity problem. Since they aren't, and I've only seen Pioneer owners complaining about this error message, it would seem that Pioneer in their firmware included code that did not completely adhere to USB standards, hence the message that you posted here. Apple did not make a change that they knew would disable some head units from that company.

There are steps you can take with your device, at your own risk, the will allow you to go back but it is not supported by Apple and you will not find any information about it here. But the bottom line is that Pioneer made a mistake and it is on them to resolve your issue.

As mentioned, we are all other users here - you are not addressing Apple. If you want Apple to know about it, contact them.

As for the remainder of your post - you need to employ some logic and common sense. When a software developer introduces a new iOS or Mac OS (or any other flavor), it is logical that they cannot possibly make it work with every other thing in the world (whether that be cars, an accessory, or anything else) - it is simply not feasible or possible. That is why Apple releases beta versions of the new software months in advance to all the other manufacturers/developers - so they can test it with their own stuff. Some of them manage to have an update ready when the new iOS comes out - others lag behind. And, still others decide not to update their device(s) - that is their decision and the consumer should/needs to contact them.

FWIW, if these car problems are USB port related, then it would probably have been a firmware update that might have caused the problem.

Have you (or anyone else with an issue with their car) contacted your car manufacturer to see if there is a firmware update available by going to your service dept? If you have, then have you contacted Apple and presented your problem in a calm manner rather than derogatory remarks?

And no, I am NOT a "fanboy", but I am logical and try to evaluate both sides' possible issues.

It's Pioneer's problem and they know it:

April 27, 2018

Dear Valued Pioneer Customer:

Pioneer has become aware of an incompatibility of the “iPod” source function in certain Pioneer multimedia receivers when connected to an iPhone® or iPod touch® device running iOS 11.3x via USB cable. If you connect by USB cable an iPhone or iPod touch device that has been updated to iOS 11.3x, an error message will display on the iPod source screen and you will not be able to play content from the connected device. Connection of an iPhone or iPod touch by Bluetooth or of an Android OS device by Bluetooth or USB is not affected.

If you use an iPhone or iPod touch with an AVH-270BT, AVH-271BT, AVH-280BT, AVH-290BT, AVH-291BT, or MVH-AV290BT receiver, please connect the iPhone or iPod touch device via Bluetooth. For AVH-170DVD, AVH-171DVD, AVH-180DVD, or AVH-190DVD receivers, to maintain compatibility with iPod source, please continue using iOS 11.2x or older with your iPhone or iPod touch.

Pioneer is working to resolve the issue and will update this notice. Please check back here for updates. I was having this problem with my Pioneer receiver and also with my Chevy’s MyLink radio and also with some iHome devices and also with... you get the picture. So with so many different devices having the hiccup, I suspected that it might have been an Apple IOS issue and I just needed to wait until Apple released an update that worked.

It’s impossible for a manufacturer like Apple to test and guarantee compatibility with so many 3rd party devices. When you stop and think about it, it’s amazing how well so many devices work so well with Apple products. However, this problem was pretty widespread across multiple manufacturers and it was clear to me that it was an Apple issue, but it was more inconvenient than fatal.

Being patient and waiting until IOS 11.4 came out proved to be the fix as the iPhone is now working on all systems again.

Thank you very much for your efforts benj888. I'm happy to see that the solutions wasn't something ridiculous, like accepting that your device shouldn't work anymore and buying a new one. I'm also happy to see that Apple worked on an update that fixed this problem instead of deciding it would not support older hardware (6 months to 2 years old) because, you know, they can't support all hardware that used to interact smoothly with their products. I was a tad worried I'd have to wait for pioneer to redesign their entire assembly line of stereo systems, but I guess it was really obvious that Apple would simply work with pioneer to hammer out a solution that kept its customer base happy.

It's weird, in retrospect, that I ever thought a company so sensitive to customer needs would tell so many of its users that they should simply sell off all their apple devices in case they didn't like an interface issue involving one of their products. Huh. Well anyway, thank you for your work and updates. I'm going to go back to enjoying my music in my car.
