iPhone SE iOS 11.3.1 USB to Pioneer AVH-280BT Error-02-60 iPod Firmware version is old

Pioneer AVH-280BT car head unit

Head Unit is a Pioneer AVH-280BT when connecting via USB, iPhone charges, however, not connecting: getting Error-02-60 “iPod Firmware version is old”, of all things. Yes, I tried several power cycles with the iPhone, turn head unit off then on again, starting music in the phone with the music app before connecting, nothing makes any difference.

I can connect via bluetooth, and play music, however, functions/features are missing or not available that are with USB connection.

A few months ago I had ZERO issues with connecting previous iPhones to this unit, using iOS 11, (I think up to 11.2.1?), also currently connecting iPad Mini (1st gen.) w/iOS 9.3.5. works fine. ...Is there something about 11.3 or 11.3.1 that is causing issues for anyone else?

I’m beginning to regret not spending a little more on a Pioneer unit that has upgradeable firmware, (this one does not). Apple really needs to not mess with iOS USB music connectivity.

I would like to repost something that was part of a reply above:

Pioneer is aware of the issue, and, apparently working on it. As far as Apple goes, yes, I have sent them feedback, I was going to call, then I saw the notice from Pioneer, so, I'm sure both Apple and Pioneer is Aware of the issue.

If you have one of the Pioneer DVD head units listed below that do not have Bluetooth, and you have not updated your iOS, WAIT, do not update, read below:

I would also like to emphasize that iOS updates are release far more often than ever, and we are pushed to install these updates, we want to install them because they have the latest security updates. Again, Apple needs to warn people when code is changed that might break functionality, I would never have expected this from . release, maybe from a major upgrade, but, not just a . release, these are supposed to improve and add function, not take them away.

I am going to emphasize something about iOS updates - here is a link to the licensing agreement which you agreed to:

https://www.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iOS112.pdf

And here some excerpts:

Section 2 i:

If you choose to allow automatic app updates, your iOS Device will periodically check with Apple for updates to the apps on your device and, if one is available, the update will automatically download and install onto your device. You can turn off the automatic app updates altogether at any time by going to Settings, tap iTunes & App Store, and under Automatic Downloads, turn off Updates.

And, here is an excerpt of the Section 7 (please do read the entire thing):

7. Disclaimer of Warranties.

7.2

you expressly acknowledge and agree that, to the extent permitted by

applicable law, use of the ios software and any services performed by or

accessed through the ios software is at your sole risk and that the entire risk as

to satisfactory quality, performance, accuracy and effort is with you.

7.3

to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the ios software and

services are provided “as is” and “as available”, with all faults and without

warranty of any kind, and apple and apple’s licensors (collectively referred to

as “apple” for the purposes of sections 7 and 8) hereby disclaim all warranties

and conditions with respect to the ios software and services, either express,

implied or statutory, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties and/or

conditions of merchantability, satisfactory quality, fitness for a particular

purpose, accuracy, quiet enjoyment, and non-infringement of third party rights.

7.4

apple does not warrant against interference with your enjoyment of the ios

software and services, that the functions contained in, or services performed or

provided by, the ios software will meet your requirements, that the operation of

the ios software and services will be uninterrupted or error-free, that any

service will continue to be made available, that defects in the ios software or

services will be corrected, or that the ios software will be compatible or work

with any third party software, applications or third party services. installation

of this ios software may affect the availability and usability of third party

software, applications or third party services, as well as apple products and

services.

These legal terms - which you have agreed to - really make your entire argument about Apple's responsibilities irrelevant.

I am aware of how any and all companies write these kind of legal terms to protect themselves.

>Again, with macOS, I can easily go back to the previous macOS.

with iOS Apple disables the ability to go back.

I don't care what legal terms they use to protect themselves, that doesn't make it good for the customer. If they care about customer service, they will learn to warn people of major changes made to the OS that might affect it's usability.

This is unacceptable customer service. This isn't about what is legal for them to do, it's about people, their customers.

> What kind of change would they make in the middle of an iOS cycle that would completely disable USB connectivity? We are their paying customers and we need to know more about what they are doing. There are laws about transparency as well, that protect consumers, if you want to make it about legalities.

It is obviously impossible to make you see things rationally. But, you may want to read through the ToU here:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5952

My final advice:

Any company is entitled to do things the way they think is best. Since you do not like anything about how Apple does things, why don't you sell your Apple device(s) and buy a different product.

Good luck with the forums for other platforms.

iOS 11.4 FIXED THIS! 😀😀

I did contact Apple support, in as far as reporting a bug, but, I didn't call them. Once I calmed down about it, my instincts were telling me maybe it's a bug and to wait since the 11.4 betas were moving along quickly.

So, since this was fixed by an iOS update, it was not Pioneer's problem after all.

...In fact, I think USB connectivity is faster than it was previously, seems to start to play music faster than bluetooth.

😀

The release notes show 11.4 update may fix various connectivity issues:

"• Fixes an issue where CarPlay audio could become distorted
• Fixes an issue where selecting music from your iPhone could fail when playing music over Bluetooth or when connected to USB on some vehicles"

Thank you very much for your efforts benj888. I'm happy to see that the solutions wasn't something ridiculous, like accepting that your device shouldn't work anymore and buying a new one. I'm also happy to see that Apple worked on an update that fixed this problem instead of deciding it would not support older hardware (6 months to 2 years old) because, you know, they can't support all hardware that used to interact smoothly with their products. I was a tad worried I'd have to wait for pioneer to redesign their entire assembly line of stereo systems, but I guess it was really obvious that Apple would simply work with pioneer to hammer out a solution that kept its customer base happy.

It's weird, in retrospect, that I ever thought a company so sensitive to customer needs would tell so many of its users that they should simply sell off all their apple devices in case they didn't like an interface issue involving one of their products. Huh. Well anyway, thank you for your work and updates. I'm going to go back to enjoying my music in my car.

You can edit but you have a 15 minute window.

It is patently clear from the statement you found the Pioneer is fully aware of the problem and they are taking responsibility for it. That may involve working with Apple to see if they will come up with some sort of work around but that does not make it Apple's responsibility.

It's Pioneer's problem and they know it:
