I've my MB 2008 Aluminium with SATA HDD. I just grabbed a Crucial MX500 SSD to replace.
Question:
Should I format the SSD before I put it in MB?

Yes. The new hard drive should be formatted. Select “Disk Utility” from the Utility drop down menu. Select your new hard drive from the left column in Disk Utility. Click on the “Erase” tab. Choose the Volume format (I recommend “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”).

You don't need an OS to use Disk Utility. Install the hard drive.
Turn on the computer power, and hold down the COMMAND key and the R key at the same time. Hold them until the macOS utilities screen opens. Select Disk Utility and format the new drive.
You can format it in an enclosure, or just format it once you have installed it in the computer. Your call.
Arg. I didn't even consider the Mac being that old. Sorry...you will have to get your hands on the installer disk. Most computer store will have a copy lying around somewhere.
This means, place the SSD in and install OS first. After OS successfully installed, do a disk formatting step? Sorry, I have no idea about the procedure, haha. Hope you could lead me the way. Appreciate!

** regarding to install OS from USB Drive, as simple as download the OS from Apple Store to the USB Drive, then boot it from MB? Or something should I consider?

Unfortunately, I'm not able to proceed, and it showed up Question Mark Folder! Btw, I'm using 2008 MacBook, OS Installer Disk required to launch Disk Utility?

No problem! Finally, I downloaded Installer on the old HDD then boot up from it (as external hard drive), and successfully stalled OS on SSD!
