Emails on server with strikethrough

I am using Apple Mail as my email client. I have 3 email accounts - one from my ISP (BT), a Googlemail account and another from my web hosting service (1and1).

Recently emails viewed on the 1&1 account have a strikethrough and are not downloaded to Apple Mail. I contacted 1&1 who felt this was an Apple problem so I contacted Apple but was unable to resolve this. I deleted my 1&1 mail accounts on both my iMac and iPad and this resolved the problem if I viewed emails on the server. However, as I prefer to use Apple Mail for all my email accounts I am still seeking an answer. I downloaded Thunderbird as an email client and everything from 1&1 works. I thought it might be a temporary problem with the Apple server and 1&1 so created my 1&1 account again on Apple Mail but the strikethrough continues.

It is not the end of the world as I can download emails with Thunderbird but it is a mystery to me why this is happening. I did receive a "phishing" email on the 1&1 account asking me to confirm that my domain name is still active and unfortunately I responded to it but could not get past the "captcha" screen. I did not have to enter any passwords so I do not think my account was compromised, however, to be safe I changed the password for the 1&! account.

Any help/suggestions will be more than welcome. TIA.

I used Safari instead of Google's browser and logged in to the email account. The messages that had strikethrough have disappeared, the only ones left in the inbox are the 3 from last week dated Thursday and 23 April as in the screenshot I sent you.

I also tried to view the messages using Thunderbird and could only see the 3 messages above.

Earlier today the "junk" messages on the 1&1 account downloaded to my Junk folder. I deleted them from my Junk folder on my iMac - they are now in my Trash folder on the iMac as well as in the Trash folder on Webmail.

Not sure how this is occurring. It is as if they downloaded successfully at perhaps the start of the day and then disappear!

Still to delete my login items, but not sure if it will make any difference now that the strikethrough emails have gone.

Hi Eric

I did remove Trusteer as you suggested. I thought the problem was resolved but it hasn't. I have just tried to download my email messages from the server to both Apple Mail and also using Thunderbird but nothing has been downloaded. However, when I used webmail I can see messages from today which have a strike through - see attached screenshot. I didn't try Safe Mode perhaps I should?

Since my last reply I've logged into the Test Account (Guest User) once more which has no login items. Using webmail the email in the inbox has a strikethrough but those in the Spam and Trash folders do not. When I use Thunderbird/Apple Mail there are no new emails downloaded but those in the spam folder do not have a strikethrough.

As I have tried to view and download emails using 2 different email clients I am beginning to think that this is perhaps a problem with 1&1 my web host as emails from my other accounts (Gmail and BT - my ISP) are ok.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Also try the Safe Mode.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

Safe Mode - About

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Etrecheck – System Information

Apr 28, 2018 4:16 AM in response to Eric Root

Thanks Eric -That suggestion seems to have worked. I set up another user account, recreated the offending email account and was able to download the emails from the server to Apple Mail and also to see them on the server without strikethrough. I ran Etrecheck and attach the report. There doesn't seem to be anything as far as I an see that could have caused this problem. Mind you I am not a full techie!

I recreated the email account in Apple Mail on my account and everything seems to have worked - for the moment! Fingers crossed. Thanks.

David
