could not complete your request app store error

I keep on getting notifications to update software via the App Store (at the moment these are updates to Pages, Keynote, etc., and a lot of applications I don't use).

When I hit Update I get these errors.

As far as I know, it's not wanting to update an item that I purchased.

This happens all the time even when I try updating the system.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Good morning RobCubbon,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you are trying to update some applications on your Mac and are getting error messages from the Mac App store. Are you choosing the option to "Update All" or are you choosing to Update button beside each individual application of the 8 updates showing in your screenshot? Which specific applications are generating the error messages above?
The first step I would suggest in addressing this issue is to confirm you have a current Time Machine backup of your computer.
How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac
Once the Time Machine backup is complete, if you are getting error messages about applications that you don't use, I would suggest deleting them from the Applications folder. You can always redownload them from the App store at a later date if you change your mind.
It appears your operating system is OS X Mavericks. Some of the updates may be software updates to match the latest version of the operating system, which is macOS High Sierra. If you uninstall the applications that you don't use, that may stop some of the prompts to update the software.
If you don't wish to receive updates from the App Store, you can turn this feature off. In the App Store preferences you can disable "Automatically Check for Updates."
If the remaining applications are ones that you do want, then try restarting the computer to refresh the connection to the Mac App Store. The resource below provides some additional troubleshooting steps for the Mac App Store:

Hi, thank you for your response.

I'm on HighSierra 10.13.4

I get the same error whether I attempt to update all or update individually.

However, I've just updated the latest Security Update 2018-001 which I have been able to do for a while.

However, it appears that I can't update any apps.

I've deleted Pages, Numbers, iMovie, and one other I don't use. But I have 4 or so that I''ve downloaded and actually use. It would be nice to be able to update them. Of course, I guess I could trash them and re-upload them. But I would like to get to the bottom of this.
