deleting e-mail

The iPad users guide for ios 11 states:

“View then delete a message. Tap a message to open it. When you’re ready to delete it, tap the trash can. To turn the confirmation of deletion on or off, go to Settings > Mail > Ask Before Deleting.”

Unfortunately no trash can appears on my iPad screen.

So how do you delete email?

Mac Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

I have 5 icons: flag, move,archive. left arrow(reply, Forward.Print), and new message. No trash can in Portrait or landscape. This is an imap account using the default creation. Swiping to the left does delete the e-mail. Running iOS 11.3.1. There are no restrictions that I know about.

It is interesting on another iPad running iOS 9.3 I do see the trash can. The trash can is instead of archive.

The archive setting is in the email account in Settings>Accounts & Passwords, then select the email account in question, then tap on the account, and go to Advanced, and you should see a section headed Move Discarded Messages Into: and there is a selection for Deleted Mailbox or Archived Mailbox. If you are seeing Archive instead of the Trash can, then yours must be set on Archive. You should be able to change it.

When I open an email on my iPad, the trash can should exist in the upper right corner, whether you are in portrait or landscape mode. There should be a line of 5 icons in the upper right. A flag, folder, trash can, left curved arrow, and then the create icon for a new mail.

What kind of mail account is this? Do you have any restrictions turned on for your device? Also, have you tried from the mailbox without opening a mail and swiping to the left to try and delete the mail?
