Finder is Slow, Machine Crashes

I'm using a late 2009 iMac running 10.13.4 with 16 GB memory. I usually have 5 or 6 Finder tabs and 20 to 30 Chrome tabs. My 499 GB HD has 40% available.

For the last several weeks Finder has been getting slow. After a restart it is fine but gradually gets slower and slower and starts beachballing. Eventually there will be a crash but I cannot correlated it with whatever I am doing at the time.

Today I downloaded EtreCheck. Below is the report. I would appreciate any help that I can get.

EtreCheck version: 4.2.1 (4C020)

Yes.

It might not be very useful though. For example, if AHT identifies a specific hardware fault, it is nearly certain to exist. However, it might conclude "no trouble found" when an unidentified (usually, intermittent) hardware fault is in fact causing the problem.

A more useful and conclusive test would be to boot the Mac from a different macOS startup disk. If the Mac starts and works properly with it, then the internal one is most likely defective and requires replacement.

To start a Mac from an external hard disk drive, install macOS on it and then read How to select a different startup disk - Apple Support.

The older a Mac's hard disk happens to be, the more likely it is to be worn out. By now, a 2009 era iMac's hard disk drive should be considered "old". Hard disks are inexpensive parts to replace, but it is a tedious repair. Your model is much easier to work on than newer ones though.

Bottom line is:

I got a 2 TB external drive.

Restored Time Machine into it.

Changed Startup Disk to this external drive.

Rebooted and I know have a machine that does not crash and doesn't have a slow Finder.

It did take a while for the performance to come back which shows that there is a lot of caching between a processor and an HD nowadays.

John, I'm delighted by this and think you hugely!!!

May 10, 2018 4:42 PM in response to John Galt

John,

In the nearly 9 years that I've had this mac I never used any cleaner. Instead I just did it myself. But when this problem popped up I searched the internet and found advice that said you should always have 20% free disk and I had only 10%. CleanMyMac got me to 40%. It did not fix the problem but at least I can cross disk space off the list of possible causes.

But as I say above I used CleanMyMac after I had this problem for weeks so it is not the cause of my woes.

May 12, 2018 12:16 PM in response to John Galt

John,

I have two 2 GB external hard disks. One is for iTunes and has 1TB free. The other is for Time Machine and is full and I get notices now and then that TM is deleting some of the oldest stuff to make room for the newer stuff. But my internal HD is only 0.5 GB so surely a full backup would fit into the 1TB available on the iTunes HD.

So maybe I could Restore From Backup into the 1TB free space on the iTunes disk and then restart with Command-R and select the iTunes disk to boot from?

Do you think that can work or is it too hairy for a 73-year old guy with weak short term memory to pull off?

May 12, 2018 3:32 PM in response to grok12

Don’t restore a Time Machine backup onto the disk containing your iTunes music, because the first thing that does is to erase that disk. It has enough space but you’d lose your music.

It’s completely normal and expected for Time Machine to erase older backups when it needs the space they occupy, so the warning is merely informative (and you can turn it off if you find it annoying). Although you can use a disk containing other, non-Time Machine files as a Time Machine backup disk, it’s not a good idea for that reason and others. I prefer to keep things simple and advocate using drives dedicated for Time Machine’s exclusive use.

May 15, 2018 4:54 PM in response to John Galt

I've purchased a new external hard drive on Amazon Prime and it will be here either today or tomorrow.

I've been studying Restore From Backup and I can't find any directions explaining how to make the restore go to the new external HD rather than the old internal one. Is it on one of the screens that comes up during the restore process?
