Finder is Slow, Machine Crashes

I'm using a late 2009 iMac running 10.13.4 with 16 GB memory. I usually have 5 or 6 Finder tabs and 20 to 30 Chrome tabs. My 499 GB HD has 40% available.

For the last several weeks Finder has been getting slow. After a restart it is fine but gradually gets slower and slower and starts beachballing. Eventually there will be a crash but I cannot correlated it with whatever I am doing at the time.

Today I downloaded EtreCheck. Below is the report. I would appreciate any help that I can get.

EtreCheck version: 4.2.1 (4C020)

Report generated: 2018-05-09 19:07:57

Download EtreCheck from https://etrecheck.com

Runtime: 6:40

Performance: Below Average

Problem: Beachballing

Description:

Finder is slow.

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Kernel panics - This system has experienced kernel panics. This could be a sign of hardware failure.

Obsolete hardware - This machine may be considered obsolete.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

Low performance - EtreCheck report took over 5 minutes to run. This is unusual.

Yes.

It might not be very useful though. For example, if AHT identifies a specific hardware fault, it is nearly certain to exist. However, it might conclude "no trouble found" when an unidentified (usually, intermittent) hardware fault is in fact causing the problem.

A more useful and conclusive test would be to boot the Mac from a different macOS startup disk. If the Mac starts and works properly with it, then the internal one is most likely defective and requires replacement.

To start a Mac from an external hard disk drive, install macOS on it and then read How to select a different startup disk - Apple Support.

The older a Mac's hard disk happens to be, the more likely it is to be worn out. By now, a 2009 era iMac's hard disk drive should be considered "old". Hard disks are inexpensive parts to replace, but it is a tedious repair. Your model is much easier to work on than newer ones though.

"Cleaning" apps are scams. Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.

  • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
  • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
  • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
  • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or your Mac's operating system are eventually released.
  • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent OS X's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.

To remove CleanMyMac 3 itself, use its Uninstaller module, followed by these additional steps:

Remove the file ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

  • To navigate to that file, copy and paste the following line into the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder...

~/Library/LaunchAgents/

  • Locate the following file and drag it to the Trash:
  • com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

    • Then, open  (Apple menu) > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
    • Select the item CleanMyMac3 Menu
    • Click the [—] (minus) button.
    • Restart your Mac.

Beware that reinstalling macOS alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system. To recover from the effects of having used it to modify OS X / macOS, the additional software you require and the essential files you need, follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

    • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot macOS Recovery, and at the macOS Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
    • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.
      • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using macOS Recovery, and then create a new User Account whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
      • To erase and install macOS read How to reinstall macOS on your Mac.
        • Follow Step 2 to completely erase that Mac's internal storage: Erase a volume using Disk Utility.
        • Then, follow the procedure in Move your content to a new Mac.
        • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select Transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
        • Under Select the Information to Transfer, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
      • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
      • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

Verify all remnants of "CleanMyMac" have been removed by running EtreCheck again and posting an updated report. Then, please determine if the same problems occur in "Safe Mode": Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. There will be additional troubleshooting steps to follow.

    May 10, 2018 5:57 PM in response to grok12

You have been misled by popular Mac mythology to distract from your stated problem of a slow, crashing Mac. Macs don't need 10%, 20%, 5% or any other percent free space any more than they need "cleaning". As you determined for yourself using "CleanMyMac" didn't help and is likely to have caused additional, unrelated problems.

If a Mac runs low on available disk space it will tell you. Follow my instructions. Given the symptoms the eventual cause is likely to be a hard disk drive operating in a state of failure. Software can't fix defective hardware.

    May 15, 2018 5:15 PM in response to grok12

Yes, restoring with Time Machine will ask you where to perform the restoration. Follow the instructions under "Restore everything from a Time Machine backup" in How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac and be absolutely certain the disk being restored (the target) is the correct one.

When you get the disk drive be sure to format the drive for macOS first. Use Disk Utility to do that. Choose GUID for its partition scheme and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as its format.

Most hard disk drives come reformatted for use with Windows, and even if they don't they often contain a lot of "free" software that isn't worth even that much. Erasing it gets rid of the junk that is not necessary and often causes trouble for Mac users.
