My App Store shows macOS High Sierra as “Installed”, but why do I see an older OS version (10.9.5) on About This Mac?

The problem is that the "Install" button on the macOS High Sierra is greyed out so I can't install it. I have a MacBook late 2009 model.

I’m not sure how to proceed. Maybe my OS is so outdated that it can’t be updated anymore?

MacBook, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), MacBook Late 2009, 13 inch

The Mac App Store is referring to the installer, not the OS. Open it from the Applications folder or the Dock.
