iPhone backup fails because the iPhone disconnected

For the last few weeks, I have been unable to backup or sync my iPhone. All attempts end with an error message that 'iTunes could not back up the iPhone "<phone name>" because the iPhone disconnected.' I'm not sure why my phone is disconnecting. The phone is functioning normally in all other respects. How can I get more information to fix it? Thanks.
