Can't add accounts in Mail - stuck on "Next"

Hi,

I have recently deleted my IMAP account from Mail (High Sierra), and now I want to add it again.

But when I have filled out all the info (username, password, in- and outgoing serverinfo), it asks which apps I want to use it with. I only have two options: E-mail and Notes. I choose "E-mail" and press "OK". And then nothing happens. I can press "OK" 10 times, at nothing happens. The dialogue box is still there.

Anyone, who has a clue what to do?

Thanks in advance

There's a very simple fix. My problem was the same as the Original Poster: clicking "Next" does nothing.

(Before following these steps, make sure you remember all the passwords for your accounts, because the saved passwords will be deleted.)

This is what worked for me:

1. Open the Keychain Access utility in your Applications folder.

2. In the "Keychain Access" dropdown list, open "Preferences..."

3. Click "Reset My Default Keychains" and follow the prompts.

4. Restart your computer.

You will be prompted to re-enter the passwords for all your e-mail accounts. If you were having trouble adding a new e-mail account, it should work fine now.

As another poster on this thread has mentioned, the problem is a conflict in the keychain, which creates an endless process loop at the "Next" button. The problem gets fixed when you reset the keychain. Using the above steps is safer than going into your keychain library and just deleting a bunch of files.

The problem occurs when you click "Done" in your last screenshot. Nothing happens.

We are quite some people, who has this problem, so I'm 99% sure its a common flaw in the latest version of MacOS in certain settings.

Apple should really attend this issue. Right now I dont use my iMac for work because of this incredibly annoying issue (dont wanna install another mail client at this time).

A workaound is to add another useraccount as administrator and try from there (works for me) - but then you will have to transfer everything.

I've got the same problem. Started with Mail not picking up Gmail. I removed the account from Mail and tried adding again but it wouldn't add. I can access Gmail on my phone and via browser but not with Mail. Then iCloud started acting up and now I can't access it either via Mail. Mail still can access my Hotmail account but won't let me add Gmail. Up until today, everything has worked for the past 5 years perfectly. I've followed the suggestions posted by Apple and others but nothing works. There's obviously a bug in Mail. Unless it's fixed soon, I'll be looking for another email client. Please get this fixed, Apple!

Another one with the same problem, had several severe problems with my Mac lately, seems like apple is loosing it, and I read all the replies apple comes with and it seems like they don't even bother to read the question before answering a bunch of crap. after iPad, iPhone, Mac, I really start to look into other makes, maybe they do care about their clients, smaller companies usually does. Did apple even find an answer to this problem, I don't see they did, just ignoring you.

Hi John,

I agree with all of the above, apple is not what it used to be. I had the same problem, tried everything and finally got it solved before the Mac went out of the window. Well, you might not be happy with how to fix this problem, but I share it with you and then you decide;

1. Back up all your files, don't use time machine, you won't be able to read your files later.

2. re-install high Sierra from scratch, don't use repair, time machine or any other solution, install as new, I hope you know how to do this, cmd+S when you start, format your disk, install high Sierra as new.

This was the only way I found fixing the problem.

Good luck, Preben.

I have the same problem. I can easily add a new email account, but I can not add one that has been removed. And just as several others I removed it as Mail just wouldn't synchronize my account, stating that either account or password was incorrect. Not so much. So annoying.

Installed another email client om my Mac and it works fine, embarrassing for Apple not fixing this problem.

*sigh*...I have the same problem. Glad to see it's not just me...but would be really nice if there was a fix for this! I had noticed my iCloud had stopped syncing my files. Turned off the account, tried to re-add, couldn't do it...same issue as reported. Tried adding a different email address from my work...same issue, button just keeps saying "Next". So frustrating!

I have read all the replies queries. here is a conclusion i drew:
you have had your account configured earlier. You were stuck at some point for which you had to reconfigure your accounts back to Apple Mail. But your account fails at a certain step.

can you give one more thing a try?
go to your desktop screen. click on Go>Go to folder

now locate ~/Library/Mail/V5/

You can find a few folders with names as long hexadecimal codes. These are your files that represent the profiles that were ever configured to your Apple mail. move them to trash.

I feel these local files of your emails might be interfering the second time you are configuring your account.

rever to me if that really works. i am just assuming.

I recently update my OS to mojave. Does this method work on mojave or only for High Sierra?

Anyway, I was able to add the problem email (my 2nd email) to the ‘Test Admin’ account but when I restart & go back to add the problem email to my Main Account, it is still stuck in the ‘Next’ button loop.

In your step to remove all items under keychain folder, do you mean ‘ALL’ that are under this, including any sub-folders?

As you mentioned, the problem exisist in the keychain and I already removed the files under keychain folder except the sub-folder w/bunch of other files.
