iPad Pro 12.9” not responding to touch intermittently

I bought an 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 around 6 months ago and since day one I’ve had trouble with the screen not responding to touch intermittently. It will randomly stop responding to my touch for anywhere between 1 and 30 seconds before coming back, it’s most noticeable when typing as letters or whole words will be missed which is infuriating. The home button still responds and usually gets things working again. I’ve also found that having bluetooth off stops it happening quite so often but it still happens (it’s happened a few times just typing this message out). The Apple Pencil always seems to work, it’s just finger touches that stop doing anything.

I kept hoping an update would fix the issue but nothing has changed yet. I love the iPad but this issue is unacceptable for such an expensive piece of equipment and is driving me nuts now. I’ve tried doing an erase and restore twice with no effect. I also keep the screen as clean as I can.

Im concerned about sending this in to Apple to be looked at because it’s an intermittent issue that they may not be able to replicate in the no doubt short testing they do. Has anyone else with this issue had any luck with apple support fixing it?

My iPad Pro 12.9 was spastically unresponsive to touches on the screen when I typed on the keyboard. Some times I would continually tap on one or two keys and nothing! I took off my case and no issues. I got to thinking and realized that I had the case folded up so the magnetic cover that turns the iPad on when I opened and closed it was on the back of the iPad. I decided to try turning that function off and it worked! No issues!!I turned off Lock/Unlock feature under settings/display brightness for the iPad cover and now no issues. Don’t get rid if your case or cover, just turn that feature off. Hope that helps 😉

In my experience, the longer the use the worse it becomes. It happens more often and for longer periods of time. I have captured several video clips using my phone of my iPad Pro 3rd-gen not responding. I am looking forward to sharing these videos the next time I visit an Apple store as tech support over the phone is laughable.

I am probably one of the few who think this is a hardware issue. If it were software Apple would fix it with an update. Think recalls and that explains why it hasn’t been solved.

I have two pros that are affected by this. 2017 and 2018. At this point it doesn’t even matter to me what caused the problem. I don’t want to keep trying users work arounds because none of them work for long. I want Apple to solve this in my lifetime.

An update since restoring my iPad Pro in May (see earlier posts). Initially it was like a new machine and stayed that way for some time. It is still much, much better than before the restore, when it was pretty much unusable, but a few annoying delays have crept back in, not badly so and I use it every day alongside my MacBook.

We await with interest to see what happens in the future.

Yes, now I’m trying out the iPad OS 13 beta the problem has returned, though it took awhile to. So it seems that whenever its been fixed in betas it’s been due to a fortuitous accident. If they can figure out what’s going on with that, it might go some way to fixing the problem.

For now I’ll have to try the reset button trick, or the turning off touch to wake, which will be annoying since it’s such a handy thing.

To extend your already strained expectations of Apple’s proposed solution, the “new” $500 device would actually have been a “reconditioned” (i.e., “brown box”) substitute for your existing iPad - a substitute which would, in all probability, have previously been repaired by Apple.

After parting with $500 and your current iPad, it would be “repaired” and subsequently used, by Apple, to substitute somebody else’s “broken” iPad...

In theory at least, Apple claim that the substitute items are “as new” and have a short warranty . Some recipients of reconditioned iThings have been very satisfied with their substitute - whilst others complain of other defects being/becoming apparent.

I have identical issues, I have just loaded 13.2.3, but my ipad pro 12.9 inch 2nd generation is still doing the same intermittent touch thing, also driving me nuts!!

Run out of options and tricks and tips given online - resorting to the genius bar....

My other ipad 1st generation does not do this, even with 13.2.3 - although reluctant to go to 13.2.3 on that one in case it suddenly decides to do the same thing!

This is what happens when apple decide to rush through a half baked system to accompany a new phone. This would never have happened with Jobs on the case!!

I guess time will tell, i was thinking about getting an air 3 until i read here that those are having the same issue. I firmly believe its software issues as I got my pro 10.5 right after they came out and had no issues with it for the longest time until ios12, and its been the same since, hasn't gotten worse or better. I would tend to believe if it was hardware related it would get worse over time which hasn't been the case

Problem with both articles is that they both mention only two ongoing posts when in actuality there are three.

These are the ONLY two reports posted by the online tech media in over an entire year!

And both articles failed to mention that for quite a long time the Apple Support communities were receiving daily, separate posts about this intermittent, unresponsive touch screen issue.

At least 1or 2 individual postings a day ( with maybe 5-10 users in each post afterward ) for nearly a full year!

I know this because for an entire year, I fielded/replied to nearly every single individual post about this issue and those individual posts is what has been “upping” the actual amount of affected iPad Pro models, but still a few thousand iPad Pro models being reported here in the ASC is still a very small percentage/minority of iPad Pro models affected and even smaller when it is spread out among the entire 4 year iPad Pro model run.

Millions of iPad Pro users are not having this issue compared to only a few thousand iPad Pro users who are.

AND, I have noticed since iPadOS 13.2. and 13.3 the amount of individual postings about this issue has dropped dramatically in the past 2 months, or so.

So, Apple engineering may have partially fixed this this issue in iPadOS for, at least, some of you that have been reporting this issue, as well as the rest of the iPad Pro using world.

I had the same error with my 12.9” iPad Pro 2017. Meanwhile it‘s a 2019 model as I had it replaced at least 5 or 6 times. With every iPad I had the problem and of course it‘s also the same with the model I‘m stuck with now as Apple Care did expire meanwhile.

The only thing that I can do to use it at least somehow is by using the Pencil, but that is just a less-then-ideal workaround and no solution at all.

My wife has a first generation 12.9” iPad Pro 2016, she has no problem with the touchscreen at all...
