iPad Pro 12.9” not responding to touch intermittently

I bought an 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 around 6 months ago and since day one I’ve had trouble with the screen not responding to touch intermittently. It will randomly stop responding to my touch for anywhere between 1 and 30 seconds before coming back, it’s most noticeable when typing as letters or whole words will be missed which is infuriating. The home button still responds and usually gets things working again. I’ve also found that having bluetooth off stops it happening quite so often but it still happens (it’s happened a few times just typing this message out). The Apple Pencil always seems to work, it’s just finger touches that stop doing anything.

I kept hoping an update would fix the issue but nothing has changed yet. I love the iPad but this issue is unacceptable for such an expensive piece of equipment and is driving me nuts now. I’ve tried doing an erase and restore twice with no effect. I also keep the screen as clean as I can.

Im concerned about sending this in to Apple to be looked at because it’s an intermittent issue that they may not be able to replicate in the no doubt short testing they do. Has anyone else with this issue had any luck with apple support fixing it?

Equa,

Here is the link to the PCmag article

I too was belittled and spoken to in a very condescending way even though the problem happened right in front of their eyes. Wasn’t impressed considering I paid so much for my iPad. Apple already make so much money so was very disappointed and frustrated when they inconvenienced me so much instead of just replacing my IPad immediately. The manager who dealt with my problem said to me, “surely you can survive without playing games for a week...”, talking to me as though I was a child! when I’m actually in my mid 40s!

She told me that it was most likely a software issue and the apps I downloaded were possibly conflicting with the operating system. After recalling what she said, I’m thinking, that isn’t my problem and not my responsibility to test out for Apple. They should have just given me a new IPad and taken my faulty one to work out themselves on THEIR time why the problem was occurring rather than getting me to troubleshoot the problem, record video evidence of it and report back to them!! Absolutely ridiculous if you think about it as I’m not working for Apple or getting paid by them to fix their issues.

Customer service and after sales service is part of the overall experience when you buy any product and with the premium that Apple charges for their products, the terrible service that some of us received is inexcusable.

Thanks for the link!

I also got the “it’s one of the apps you installed” as one of the options. I thought the entire point of the apple app store was that the apps are tested and verified before they are added for download. At least apple fans keep telling me that as a advantage over android.

Apple asking you to disable TouchID sounds like they are grasping at straws and will say anything to get one to go away for a few days. My iPad with the problem has FaceID - no TouchID to create (or solve) a problem, so clearly it is not only TouchID that is causing the problem.

If I were trying to solve the problem, I'd focus on commonality between the affected devices and differences between the affected devices and the non-affected devices. Also I'd wonder why it is only iPads - especially if I thought there was a software issue. That would lead me to look carefully at the package that Apple provides to software developers for creating their apps.

I might be dreaming, but after disabling the Touch ID as instructed by Apple Support AND in addition I disabled now home button SIRI and OPEN WITH TOUCH ID functionality from settings, this seems to have solved my issues. Freezing does not happen anymore, but naturally I need to test more to see if this is really true.

Disabling "home button SIRI" and "Open with Touch ID" can be found under SETTINGS - GENERAL - ACCESSIBILITY - HOME BUTTON.

I've exactly the same problem on a 2017 iPad Pro. First noticed this after the IOS 12.2 update and been waiting for 12.3 to see if it fixed it, which it hasn't.

We have a second identical model still on v12.1 without problems. The only way I guess to check if it is software is to update that as well, but then we could have 2 dysfunctional iPad Pros.

Currently trying some of the settings recommended earlier in this thread, but it is embarrassing sitting in front of a customer trying to take notes with a failing Apple device.

Thanks MichelFM

Unfortunately the link you've provided results in an Error - Page Not Found page.

Interestingly, having activated the AssistiveTouch and just had a screen freeze trying to open an app, the AT small square menu button remains responsive, but nothing else. If this were a hardware problem with the screen, then I'd imagine the AT menu/button wouldn't work either.

IMHO it does appear to be software related.

I am so glad that I have finally found other people who have this issue.

I have been struggling for around a year with this and it has been really frustrating. I have contacted Apple a couple of times and they haven't been overly helpful apart from the usual troubleshooting. They did suggest I take it to an Apple Store for them to have a look, but the nearest is over an hour away and I can't post it in as I use it everyday for work. It is over a year old too so wouldn't be covered.

If anyone does come up with a fix, please do post.

I do think mine is behaving better since I carried out a factory reset and then restored my data.

However, have been working in a different environment at the moment. Back to normal next week, so will be able to draw a representative conclusion next week, but haven't been aware of the problems this week.

Now, if I could just do a factory reset on this 2017 MacBook for the dmn bttrfy kybord and the totally unreliable bluetooth, I'd nearly be happy. Can't believe how good an old MacBook 15" keyboard felt compared this horrible thing that must be accelerating RSI by years.

Its now been around 3 weeks since I received my new replacement iPad and unfortunately, the touchscreen problems are starting to show up again. It just doesn’t make any sense why it only shows up after a few weeks and not immediately. Was reluctant to upgrade to the latest iOS as I wasn’t having any problems initially but now I may have to just to see if the latest iOS will fix the issue.

Apple Support, if you’re reading this, please help or I will have no choice but to return my iPad for a full refund as I was told to do if the problem resurfaced again.

No one who works directly from Apple's headquarters ever reads or participates in these, largely, Apple user to user support communities.

You are just posting your comments to other Apple product users, here.

There have been reports, once again, that the iOS 12.4 betas have, supposedly, fixed this touch screen issue.

But, the same things were stated about the 12.2 and 12.3 beta versions fixing this issue, too, and it seemed to not solve this issue when the final official 12.2 and 3 updates were released by Apple.

I do not know if there is something going on when the final iOS 12 updates are released by Apple VS the beta versions that continues to cause these touch screen issues to re-appear in just the larger screen iPad Pro models.

Since this does not affect every iPad Pro, there is no pattern to discern what is causing this and why it is not happening to more iPad Pro users than the barely less than 1000 user reports here in these iPad support communities.

This but/issue seems to be a truly isolated one only affecting a small subset of the three years of iPad Pro 12.9, 10.5 and 11 inch screen models.

There are NO reports of this affecting any 2016, 9.7 inch screen iPad Pro models and, currently, no reports of this non-respinsive touch screen issue affecting the brand new 2019, 10.5 inch screen iPad Air 3 models, as yet, either.
