iPad Pro 12.9” not responding to touch intermittently

I bought an 12.9” iPad Pro 2017 around 6 months ago and since day one I’ve had trouble with the screen not responding to touch intermittently. It will randomly stop responding to my touch for anywhere between 1 and 30 seconds before coming back, it’s most noticeable when typing as letters or whole words will be missed which is infuriating. The home button still responds and usually gets things working again. I’ve also found that having bluetooth off stops it happening quite so often but it still happens (it’s happened a few times just typing this message out). The Apple Pencil always seems to work, it’s just finger touches that stop doing anything.

I kept hoping an update would fix the issue but nothing has changed yet. I love the iPad but this issue is unacceptable for such an expensive piece of equipment and is driving me nuts now. I’ve tried doing an erase and restore twice with no effect. I also keep the screen as clean as I can.

Im concerned about sending this in to Apple to be looked at because it’s an intermittent issue that they may not be able to replicate in the no doubt short testing they do. Has anyone else with this issue had any luck with apple support fixing it?

My iPad Pro 12.9 was spastically unresponsive to touches on the screen when I typed on the keyboard. Some times I would continually tap on one or two keys and nothing! I took off my case and no issues. I got to thinking and realized that I had the case folded up so the magnetic cover that turns the iPad on when I opened and closed it was on the back of the iPad. I decided to try turning that function off and it worked! No issues!!I turned off Lock/Unlock feature under settings/display brightness for the iPad cover and now no issues. Don’t get rid if your case or cover, just turn that feature off. Hope that helps 😉

This is happening to me too. I have the iPad Pro 12.9 2nd gen on iOS 12.1. I was having this issue and got a replacement which seemed to fix it for awhile. Now happening again all the time on the replacement. Anyone find a fix for this? Is it software or hardware? I would try for another replacement if I knew for sure It was a hardware issue.

Did you take it in to Apple? I've got an appointment to have mine looked at by a Apple Technician. Im convinced Apple sold me a refurbished IPad Pro. The kid who "sold" this iPad to me rushed me out the door...it was the worst shopping experience I've ever had with Apple. But I love my devices and only want it to function as promised.

It is so unfortunate. I’m sorry to hear. I filled out a survey and included the specific problems I was having with my iPad. I’m hoping they get a team to focus on that issue. I so badly want an iPad but I’m afraid I’ll be stuck with an expensive defective device. In the mean time, all I can do is wait until this is resolved before I consider buying a new one. 😫

The Apple Pencil will power-off shortly after Bluetooth on the paired iPad is turned-off - this being the shipping condion of the Pencil.

Power-off the Pencil occurs after it cannot detect the Bluetooth LE signal - the exact period isn’t known, but the Pencil will eventually completely power-off until it is re-paired with the iPad.

Not true.

Apple Pencil may sleep, but never fully turns completely off.

Plenty of posts here where Apple Pencil users stop using their Apple Pencils for a month, or a lot longer without charging up their Apple Pencils.

The battery in the Apple Pencil continues to drain.

Once the battery stayed in a flat, zero charge condition for this amount of time, or even longer, the battery in the Apple Pencil completely fails and those users had to purchase a new Apple Pencil.

The Apple Pencil does power-off.

All rechargable batteries, to some extent, suffer a degree of self-discharge. Despite the Pencil being powered-off, over an extended period it will lose charge. The smaller the battery (and the Pencil is tiny) the more noticable the effect.

Lithium Ion batteries must have a minimum terminal voltage to charge - and all such batteries contain internal electronics that disconnect the battery if the terminal voltage falls below a critical level - below which the batteries will not charge.

How do you reload important app data if you do not restore from a backup?

That data and all apps will no longer be on your iPad, unless you use iTunes 12.6.4/12.6.5 to restore apps and data.

Did you have have an iTunes data backup, as well?

So, you will have to reload all apps and any important data linked to those apps is, basically, gone forever?

The “nuclear” solution, while it may work, is not a practical one and means, basically, losing any important data.

What is the point of backing up and restoring that data, if that is no longer an option?

Not a very good solution.

This is why I prefer iTunes backups on a computer and use other data backup solutions other than iCloud.

iCloud is more of a “sync-ing”/sharing service than a data backup service.

Same problem here. My iPad Pro12.9 becomes unresponsive sometimes.........unfortunately,very often....lately!

Real disappointed after spending that $$$$ and after my MacBook Pro 2017 needs a new hard drive and new top case as well(still under warranty, thanks God)....I don’t know what to say.......more than 10 years Apple power user (and fan......attic),with more than 35 000 $ spend for Apple products .......and getting nothing more than refurbished products of the price of new........it really sounds sad!

Not a very good/bad option if you use a smart cover with your iPad as you just defeated the option to turn the screen off and on using any type of magnetic smart cover.

You would need to remember to turn this feature back on when you are done using your IPad so you can use the smart cover to turn off/on your iPad's display, again,

Not a very practical option/solution.

Not convinced this is the real cause of touch issues with iPad Pro models on iOS 12.

I have the latest iPad Pro and am experiencing the same issues of non responsive touch. I have issues with the area where the O,p,k,l keys are and sometimes the whole thing freezes for a minute or so and the hard reset won’t even work.

could it be related to the flex in the new thin model? I mainly experience it when holding the iPad up and typing lying in bed?

Yes, I suppose a call back to a different rep might help but I still feel kind of disappointed because I did bring up the fact that I have AppleCare. Even after explaining to the online chat rep and the phone rep that this problem has persisted for the last four or five months and is very aggravating they still want me to send it in for repairs and not just replace it.

I’ve been through the replacement process before and really don’t mind them putting the hold charge on my credit card. When I dropped my iPad Pro off my third-floor balcony late last year I had a new one in three days! LOL

If this is who I think this is, sorry, part of your reply here IS off-topic and not within the post discussion here.

Trying to “sneak” other, unrelated information into a non-related topic discussion isn't allowed bere, either.

And Apple doesn't really allow any type of generalised discussion here.

These technical support communities are not a social media site for any general discussions of Apple’s procedures and policies.

And while part of your reply is not a rant, per se, it is a critique/critism of Apple's Terms of Use and product support policies here.

So, it has to reported and but will be reported as an edited post and your post will be edited, unfortunately.

Nice try.

You can't really post your points and iOS knowledge in an unrelated post, like this.

I am pretty sure I know who are.

Sorry, but if we all have to follow the same rules here, you have to, also.

Hopefully the edits won't be to severe.

Try posting some of this info next time in a more related post.

Sorry.
